How to change names in main menu at top of page?
-
Hi. I’m wanting to change the names of the menu labels on the menu at the top of the page. However, I don’t necessarily want to change the titles of the associated ‘Pages’.
I’ve done this successfully in the past, so I know it can be done. But despite playing around for some time trying to achieve this again I can’t get it right.
Thanks for any help.

Hi there!
I’ve tried to do the same with my site, so I think I can help you with this ;-).
When you are creating your Menu, there is a button “Add Items”. Choosing “Custom Link” instead of “Page” allows you to add an URL to another site (or for example your Page)When you choose “Custom Link”, two field appears; “URL” and “Link text”.
To add About Page, type URL of your About Page in the URL field (http://stefancockroft.wordpress.com/about) and type anything you like to appear as a menu label to this Page in the field “Link text” – it won’t change the name of the Page.
You can find more about adding menu items here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#2-add-menu-items
Remember to delete the old items from the menu, or you’ll double the links ;-)
Hope it helps!
If something is not clear, don’t hesitate to ask ;-)

Just to clarify, adding pages as menu items also allows anyone to change menu names, just choose all the pages you want to display as your menu items on the above navigation bar, then edit them one by one, and change the name of “Navigation Label” to what you need to be shown as your menu item neme.
You can also change the Title Attribute, choose where the link should Open to; in a new or the same tab, add CSS Classes, and or add the Descriptions of the items shown above your pages in the nav bar.

@sabbathligth thank you very much for your reply and help! Your solution is better and simple :). I didn’t see it – my mistake.
@stefancockroft – as @sabbathligth mentioned, you can change item name by editing the filed “Navigation Label”. To do so, when you add items to your menu, click on the item you want to edit in the settings on the left side of the Customizer. It will expand and show a field “Navigation Label”. You can write there whatever you want to appear as a menu label.
