How to change nameservers?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to change my website’s domain from frenchwithamelie.wordpress.com, to frenchwithamelie.com.au. Here is what I am asked to do:

    —————————
    Domains
    Custom DNS Records
    Domain: frenchwithamelie.com.au

Your nameservers need to be set to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM and NS2.WORDPRESS.COM for these DNS records to work. If you have already updated the nameservers you can ignore this message; it will stop appearing soon.
    ————————

Problem is, I have NO IDEA about what they are talkign abotu or what I shoudl do.

    Please help!
    Thank you.

  • Howdy,

You’ll need to login or contact the registrar where you originally bought your frenchwithamelie.com.au domain name. WordPress.com doesn’t sell country-based domains ourselves, but does let you map an existing domain.

You can likely contact their support department asking to make the change for you. We have a template you can use on our support page at Map an Existing Domain.

If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know. Welcome to WordPress.com!

    Hello!

Thank you very much for your answer. However, I did buy in on wordpress, in the “Store” tab… does it mean I should contact wordpress?

    Thanks again.

Ah, I think I just got it! I need to buy the domain .com.au with someone else first, and then I can map it with wordpress (even if now I’m not sure about what mapping means ahem)? Is that correct?

  • That’s correct.

Registration is when you actually purchase the domain itself—giving you all rights to the domain. A domain, by itself, doesn’t do anything though.

Mapping actually links up your domain to a site—setting it up on our end so when someone visits frenchwithamelie.com.au our system knows what site we’re supposed to display back to the visitor.

When purchasing your domain, the only configuration piece needed is setting the nameservers to ns1.wordpress.com, ns2.wordpress.com, and ns3.wordpress.com (more details and a sample note you can send to your registrar’s support, if needed, are at the link in my last post). That’ll tell anyone trying to visit your browser that WordPress.com’s server have all the info of what to do with the domain.

Please let me know if you have questions or need anything more. Thanks!
