How to change post’s featured image thumbnail from square?

What can I do to change a post’s featured image thumbnail from square to full size thumbnail on the main page which 99% of the time just shows the square thumbnail with the short paragraph about the full post and not the full size of the image?

Usually the square thumbnail looks OK although it might cut off a head if a person is the subject of the image. Strangely enough, in this month’s posts, both a full size thumbnail has appeared for a post, and for another post, an unattractive square thumbnail has cut off the people in the image. So, is there a code I can use to make ALL thumbnails appear full sized but reduced to accompany the short synopsis of every post on the front page ? Both examples are here on the front page at thomasnevin.com

OK, I think I have found the solution. In edit on the post page when I choose the feature image to publish the post, I choose first EDIT IMAGE and then, SCALE option, using 250 which automatically scales the height, save and ta da! there it is, full sized image for thumbnail on index page to accompany post synopsis. Well, it’s worked for two posts so far ….

  • Hi there! Glad to know you found a solution. You can also scale your images inside the Media Library, but your workflow is correct. I’ll go ahead and close your post now, feel free to reach out again if you need help with anything else.

Thanks ezebecke, so reassuring given the increasing complexity of WP these last few years!
