How to change site URL to a URL I already own?

For example let’s say I have two sites:
    apples.wordpress.com
    and
    oranges.wordpress.com

oranges.wordpress.com has content about apples and apples.wordpress.com is currently blank.

I want to change oranges.wordpress.com to apples.wordpress.com so that I can keep the content/theme/etc.

When I’ve tried doing this by changing the URL, it creates a NEW site instead of solely just changing the URL name.

I didn’t want to delete apples.wordpress.com because from the wording it sounds that it may disable the URL after it’s deleted so that I can’t rename my other site.

    Hopefully this makes sense.

If you want to change a WordPress.com address, you can do so by following the instructions here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

As part of the process you can choose to either discard the old address or keep it (as an empty site) for future use.

Please note that you can only use the above procedure if the address you want to use is available and has not previously been created by you or someone else. If you have already created a site at the address you want to use, such as in your example, you will not be able to change the name of the existing site to another existing site, and instead will need to do an export of your content from one site and then import that content into the second one.

In your example, if apples.wordpress.com has already been created, you would need to export oranges.wordpress.com and then import it into apples.wordpress.com.

I’m actually not necessarily worried about losing content, my only concern is that there was a premade theme that was bought and is being used on the URL that I want to change.

Is there a way I could use the same premade theme for the URL I want to use?

If you want to use a premium theme on a new site you will need to purchase it again. If you simply change the URL using the process I linked previously, it will be considered the same site and no new purchase would be necessary.

Note that if you add a custom domain to the site then you won’t have to change the underlying WordPress.com address at all.

I imported/exported all of the content from the old URL into the one I want to use, however, I am still unable to use the purchased theme?

Thanks for the help by the way.

If you have two separate sites (such as apples.wordpress.com and oranges.wordpress.com), and had previously purchased a premium theme for apples.wordpress.com, then you would need to purchase the theme a second time if you want to use it on both apples and oranges.

If you only want to use the theme in one place, for example, you want to now use it on oranges.wordpress.com, and remove it from apples.wordpress.com, you can transfer the upgrade:
