How to change the theme for a blog?
-
hi
this is alex , i am new for blogging i want to know how to change the theme for my blog. -
First off we need a link to the blog you want to change the Theme on to give you accurate advice.

Unbelievable, I’m trying to start a blog but this is the most difficult site to navigate in all the 14 years I’ve been online. For heaven’s sake, where can I choose a theme? Al I see is “random search” Ridiculous!
-
Dashboard->Appearance->Themes. You can organize them by Random (default) or alphabetical, or filter for things like Custom headers. Whatever you like.
By the way, this will save you some time: http://learn.wordpress.com

Thanx for responding so quick raincoaster. I’ve tried that. Why can’t I just choose a color? What’s all this “random, Alphabetical”, etc.. I’ve been building landing pages for years using Dreamweaver yet I still can’t find something as simple as a “black theme”???
-
You certainly can, using the “Filters” raincoaster mentioned.
There’s also http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/ that offers an advanced filter function. For example, this link will show you dark themes (or themes that offer a dark color scheme).

I went here – http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/styles/dark/
According to the video, there should only be 7 black themes, but here there are fifty, some pink, others white. I don’t get it???
-
The search feature here does leave something to be desired, but it’s the best we’ve got. And the videos do go out of date pretty quickly; staff have been adding a LOT of themes lately.
-
Also, just because the thumbnail shows a pink theme or a white theme doesn’t mean that the theme is not available in black. As I said:
this link will show you dark themes (or themes that offer a dark color scheme)
-
Thanx both of you. Looks like it will take me weeks to navigate and learn to create a simple blog.

The “light” colored themes you see on the “dark” page have dark color schemes that you can choose once you activate the theme at appearance > theme options.
The video is not updated each time a new theme comes out. There have been over 50 themes introduced this year, and many of the other themes have been upgraded to have additional color schemes. That web is not a static thing, and neither is wordpress. It changes constantly with new options and new features. Reshooting a video every time a theme comes out isn’t practical.

The #1 beginner mistake we see is people waiting until they have it all wired before hitting Publish. Just pick a theme you can live with for now and start blogging. The only upgrades I recommend for a new blogger are the domain name and the Ad Free upgrade, but you don’t have to do those if you don’t want to. Just start blogging and tweak the theme later, as you go along.
If theme design tinkering is critical to you, then you need to be at WordPress.org, because here the changes we can make to the themes are limited by the CSS upgrade.
-
I’m not too fussy about the limited themes. I guess I should approach this like a total noob. WordPress.org? Hmmm…
-
There are over 150 themes. Most have customizable headers. Many have customizable backgrounds. Many have special features and some Wordpree.org blogger are waiting for some of our themes to be coded to run on WordPress.org installs. But by all means if you feel limited you can hire a web host and set up a WordPress.org install.
WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org -
You can’t of course add functionality with CSS, but a lot of people have done some very amazing things here with CSS, and the $30 per year for the custom design upgrade also includes access to all the Typekit online fonts which give you even more options.
There are two blank canvas themes here, Sandbox and Toolkit. Toolkit is the more advanced and supports a lot of HTML5 and CSS3 stuff, but Sandbox is semantically rich and has a lot of capabilities as well.
