How to change the width of a column or side bar

I would like to know how to change the width of a column or a side bar. Does that depend on the theme I choose so I cannot change it?

Are your referring to a wordpress.com blog? If so the link to the blog would be helpful. The only way the adjustments you indicate can be made is by purchasing a CSS upgrade and doing the work yourself and renewing the upgrade annually.
If you have CSS editing experience the upgrade will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.
Since there is no official support for the CSS upgrade, and very little unofficial support from volunteers, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own. If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

If you do not wish to do that you could simply choose another theme that has the width of posting space and sidebar that you prefer. Most themes have a specific width limit (measured in pixels) for images inserted in a post or a page. Thank you. It seems that I cannot change it. My blog is: ocasaz.wordpress.com. I just wanted to know if I could, for example, add a sidebar to my left, or simply change the widht of my column, and or right sidebar.

No we can’t just add sidebars or change the width of columns except by the means I pointed to above. Have you considered using the Digg3 theme? It has two sidebars; one of the left and one on the right. Perhaps it will suit you.
