How to Change URL of Premium WP.com site

  I’m helping a friend who has a Premium WordPress.com plan. She wants to rebrand her website and change the URL for the site rather than creating another Premium WordPress site. She already owns the new URL.

  If it’s possible, are there instructions on how to do this?

  Will the links to her existing posts and pages be broken or will they change to active links using the new URL?

  I have the premium site and want to change the URL to rebrand it. Are there instructions to do this?

  Would I be able to keep the links for old posts and pages for my old URL?

  Hi Susan, here’s what I’d do:

  – Map (or transfer) the new domain:
  http://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

  – Make the new name primary

  Now all links pointing to the old version will redirect to the new one. Does that help? If not, send more details and we’ll go from there.

  Hi Supernovia,

  Thanks so much for your help. I think that may be what she wants. I’m checking with her.

  So if she does this, then all links wouldn’t be broken, but they would be associated with the new URL, right?

  For instance:

  olddomain.com/about

  After the name change:

  newdomain.com/about

  Is there a way to keep the old domain with its associated posts rather than changing the existing posts to the new domain?

  Just to make this discussion easier and more accurate, what is the URL of the site you are working on?

  You list http://gettingoutfromgoingunder.wordpress.com/ in the initial post, but that site is not a WordPress.com Premium site and does not have a custom domain currently.

  Also, as a WordPress.com Premium plan subscriber, your friend has access to our livechat support team. And contacting them may be a faster way to get this sorted out:

  https://wordpress.com/help/contact

  Do keep in mind that in order to access livechat, you would need to belogged in under your friends account. For security reasons, you cannot access it on their behalf from your WordPress.com account.

  Thanks Rootjosh. Yes, somehow my free WP website Getting Out from Going Under was listed.

  I’ll let me friend know that she can access livechat.
