how to compress large image files?

I have a couple of images each about 1-3 mb in size. how can I compress them to a smaller size while maintaining most of the quality?

I use Windows Paint. Open the file in Paint. Press Ctrl-W and change both the Horizontal and Vertical Stretch Percentages from 100% to 50% or some other value. Save the image as a different name, check to see if you are satisfied with the results, if not try a different percentage. That’s what I do.

If saving as jpg’s, you should be given the opportunity to save them at a lower quality. Anything down into the medium range should produce images quite a bit smaller in file size without any noticeable degradation in quality.

Not unless you are using a pretty sophisticated image editing program such as Photoshop which has the ability to batch process images.
You might look into the Gimp image editing program, which is open source (free to use) extremely competent image editing program packed with features: http://www.gimp.org/ .
