How to connect a domain I own for free.

  • Unknown's avatar

I purchased my own domain through godaddy, and it was never made clear to me I would have to spend ANOTHER 100 dollars to use my domain with my site.
I’m a college student just trying to get my portfolio out there with the domain I own and can not afford another subscription.

Can someone please help me be able to use my domain that I bought for my site, without draining what’s left in my bank account? I’m so annoyed with WordPress.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If I can’t do it for free where can I go to have my domain be my actual website and not just a redirect?

    I’m so annoyed with WordPress.

Wordpress is free software so it seems to me it is a bargain. And WordPress.com (here) offers free sites as long as you are happy with the subdomain address ending in .wordpress.com. Personally that doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I find custom domains an unneeded added complexity. But if you wish to use a custom domain address then you either pay GoDaddy for a site there or you can pay WordPress.com to upgrade your free site to enable you to connect your new custom domain and replace the current free address.
PS: If you’d have purchased an annual plan here at WordPress.com you would have been able to register your custom domain for free for tge first year.

  • Hi there,

A domain is only one cost associated with having a website.

The other cost is hosting – you need a server connected to the web on which you can install the WordPress software. So there’s nowhere you’ll be able to set up a WordPress website, at your own domain, for free. The WordPress software is free, but hosting it online isn’t.

You mention spending $100, which is the cost of our Premium Plan, but you can also use your own domain on our cheaper Personal Plan at $48.

Your other option is to use the open source version of WordPress at another host, like directly with GoDaddy where you already have your domain, but you’ll still have to pay for hosting there as well. It’s possible they’ll have hosting plans that cost less than $48 a year, but it won’t include the maintenance, software updates, backups and security included in our WordPress.com plans.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
