How to continue posting after an absence of a few years
-
I haven’t posted anything for a few years and want to post something now. How do I get going again?

Hi there,
Go to My Site ->Posts ->Add New, and start writing :)
If you’ve been gone for a few years, you’ll notice the editor looks a little different now. You can find details on how the editor works at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/. For the most part you can just start writing as you usually do. But if you want to get fancy with your content there’s now many more options for styling different types of content, controlling the layout, etc.
If you run into anything specific that gives you trouble, please let us know.

Oh, another thing:
The Tarski theme you have active on your site was retired several years ago, so it’s not receiving updates and bug fixes any more, and won’t be compatible with many features of the new editor.
So please also consider updating your site’s theme to a more current one. You can see all our current themes under My Site ->Appearance ->Themes.

Thanks Kokkien.
I think (hope) I have it sorted. I was mucking around and it looks like I’ve written what I want to post and have saved it, but won’t publish until around the 20th, as it is to do with someone’s 70th birthday. I have previewed and edited and all seems to be ok, so let’s see.
If there is some way for you to check and clarify if all’s well, please do so you could let me know. Otherwise I’ll hit the ‘publish’ button on the 21st and hope for the best, ie that it will appear on my Ephemeral Ruminations page (https://javajones.wordpress.com/about/).
Thanks again for your assistance and hoping to hear from you again in this regard,
Cheers!

Yep, I can see that draft on your site.
If you want it to publish automatically on the 20th, you can use the Schedule Post function to set that up:
https://wordpress.com/support/schedule-a-post-or-page/
As your site has been dormant for a while, you might still need to visit the site after the scheduled time to trigger it, as the site currently doesn’t have the steady flow of traffic that would normally do it.
Otherwise I’ll hit the ‘publish’ button on the 21st and hope for the best, ie that it will appear on my Ephemeral Ruminations page (https://javajones.wordpress.com/about/).
It won’t appear on that page, though. That’s a static page on your site (you can edit it under My Site ->Pages), and it only displays the content you directly add to it.
Posts appear in your site’s feed, which is currently set to display on your site’s front page at https://javajones.wordpress.com/. So when you publish that post, it will appear as a new post at the top of the front page.

Many thanks Kokkieh.
I tried to follow your instructions and scheduled the post for May 20th. I do hope I did it correctly. If you have a way of checking, I would be really grateful if you could let me know if I did it right.
This whole episode may just nudge me on to more blogging, in which case should I make any changes to the theme and other stuff as you suggested earlier? I’m a virtually hopeless illiterate when it comes to these sorts of things, so have no problem with the appearance of the site. But anyway, do let me have your views and I’ll take it from there.
Thanks ever so much.
Hope all’s well with you in these depressing covid-related times.
Stay safe and well.
Cheers,
JJ

It doesn’t look like you saved it properly. I made a quick recording to show you how to set the date and to schedule it to be posted (I used May 25th) here: https://d.pr/i/gA13W6
If you don’t confirm the scheduling step, it won’t save properly.
Let us know if you still have trouble there!

The new block editor lets you do a lot of things that weren’t possible the last time you gave blogging a try. Here’s a guide that will give you an overview of what’s possible now:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/
Your current theme – since it has been retired – isn’t optimized to work with the new editor, so I’d encourage you to check out the new theme options we have out there:
NOTE: you want to view the theme demo first instead of using the theme on your site since you can’t switch back to your current theme if you change it now.
Hope that helps and happy blogging! :)
