How to control advertisements on free template cutting off my blog
-
Hi,
I have a fairly successful blog that engages people in my city to take a greater understanding and appreciation for forests and their role in defining our regional charater and way of life.
Over the past few years, advertisements have begun clogging up my blog template. Some of the ads are placed indiscriminately along the side such that you cannot even read the blog because ads are layered over the text. I feel horrible that wordpress has done this to my blog, after I have invested so much time an energy into. Initially, it was free and there were no ads.
Unlike WordPress, my goal is not to make money. Its to do something good for my community. What are my options to get these ads off my blog that don’t require a huge investment in time or money but that will allow people to enjoy my blog?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi bigtreeguy,

I’ve checked vancouversbigtrees.com but haven’t been able to see any ads obscuring the content. It would be great if you could make a screenshot of what is happening at your end and upload it to your Media Library so I can take a look — they shouldn’t be obscuring your content.
Also, which browser(s) and operating system are you using? Those details can be found on supportdetails.com.

Ads can be removed by purchasing a paid plan and there are a number to choose from, depending on your budget:
Let me know when you’ve uploaded a screenshot and we can take a look at that.

Thanks for your reply! I have uploaded a screenshot showing the side add hovering over the text. Let me know if you can see it. Im on a Mac 10.6.6 using Chrome. Ill try to check on different platforms if the problem is also apparent.
Being pointed toward a paid plan does not really solve the issue… I feel that my blog has been taken hostage with ads and that making me pay, on a site that was originally free, is entrapping me. It’s taken me years of research to create my website. It’s 100% not-for profit. I use it to promote environmental awareness. Really, why would wordpress target me to make a few bucks? The situation is immoral, and as a matter of principle paying is not an option.

Hi there,
I don’t see sidebar ads like that on your site at all. And as you have your site set to the full-width display option it doesn’t even have a sidebar where an ad could appear, so I’m not sure where that could be coming from.
Im on a Mac 10.6.6 using Chrome.
What version of Chrome, please? Mac OS 10.6.6 was released in 2011, which in software terms makes it an antique, so you’re likely using a very outdated version of Chrome as well, which might explain this.
Another possibility is that your theme was retired a couple year ago, so it would not have been updated to support our newest ad placements and it might be that ads are on occasion being placed that shouldn’t.
If that’s the case this isn’t something that can be fixed any more, so please check if switching to the updated version of this theme makes any difference:

We’re not targeting you to make a few bucks. Hosting your website on our servers costs us money – the fact that we let you host it with us for free doesn’t mean it doesn’t cost us anything.
We use advertising to cover those costs on free sites. The alternative would be to operate like most other hosting providers and only host sites of people who pay us with no free hosting option at all.
