how to control order and display of posts on main page

  Hi, I’m a very new user of wordpress, I have installed it on my domain, version 2.8.5. Default theme.

  All I have done so far is: created a new admin user, changed permalinks, installed a few plugins, deleted the ‘uncategorized’ category, created 2 custom categories, and made a single post to each of these 2 categories.

  The issue I’m having is that the posts I make are displayed on the main page with the oldest at the top. I would like them to be displayed with the most recent entries on top. I would also like it to show perhaps the first 10 lines or so, then a ‘read more’ link instead of the full length of the post. How can I achieve this?

  I have played around with a few other themes, but came back to default to simplify things until I resolve this.

  I have gone through all the settings again and again, but cannot figure out which ones control this behavior.

  That will NOT be happening. We wordpress.COM volunteers do NOT provide support for those who have self hosted wordpress.ORG installs.

  An incorrect answer is a worthless answer and the answers for wordpress.COM software are not the same as the answers for wordpress.ORG software. Have a nice evening.
