How to control visitors to private blog using password?

I want to keep my blog private and ask selected visitors to sign in with a password I provide in order to view it; can I do this and if so, how?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No you can’t – visitors to a private blog need to have their own account and you need to invite them in – that gives you complete control as one person per account
