How to copy custom blog theme to new blog

    Hi there.
Does anyone know how to copy a blog’s theme to a new blog? I customized my existing blog from a template, and now I want to use that custom layout for my new blog. I want to take my pre-existing home page and about page, and just put them on my new blog. Can I do that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can’t use custom themes on the wordpress.com platform unless you upgrade to the paid WordPress Pro, https://wordpress.com/pricing/

It’s not a custom theme per se. I’m using the theme Marl, but I’ve just moved blocks around. That’s all I mean.

    Does that change anything?

Hi there @kerrmachattie so you mean a full site editing template that you’ve customized?

From my earlier forum discussion with Staff, https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/fse-site-export-customized-templates/ it seems we’re not yet able to export only a customized template from one FSE theme or site to another. What you can do is export the entire site where you’ve customized a template, which does also export the template and then import the export file to your new site as long as it is using the same theme as the original site.

Regardless, I see that Staff have been flagged on your thread, so let’s wait to hear back from them.

  • Hi there,

I can confirm it’s not possible to export templates from one site to another yet, though our team is working on it.

For now I’m afraid you’d need to do it manually.

What I usually do in this case (though I’ve only done it with classic themes, not yet with block themes) is to open the two sites side by side in separate browser tabs, then just go top to bottom and copy everything over.

It sounds daunting, but with the site editor you can actually copy your entire template at once – open the template you want to copy over, and use the Copy All option to copy all the code for that template.

Then on the second site, open the template in the site editor, switch to Code Editor view, delete everything there, and paste in the code you copied from the first site. Switch back to Visual, Save, and you should be all good.

Just repeat this with each of your templates, and you should be able to get everything moved over fairly quickly.

Let us know if you have any questions about this.
