How to create a index with text appearing on the same page/background
-
Hello,
I would like to know if I can create a WordPress page with an index/list on the left side that clicking on the items allows me to open a text with image in the same page and with the same background. Do you know how can I make it? Is there some plugin compatible with my idea?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi Linda,
Are you referring to a page on a WordPress.com site? If so, then what is the address of the site?
How to most easily create such a page might depend in part upon the the theme used. Will the list be in a sidebar on the left side? If so, then having a theme with a default or optional left sidebar would be necessary. If the list will appear in a sidebar, then you could use page jumps from the items in the list to points within a page. See the Jumping to a Target on Another Page or Post section of the Page Jumps support page. The list in the sidebar could consist of Text Widget Links inserted into a Text Widget.
If the list is to be enclosed within the content of the page, then creating it will be more complicated, but you could again use page jumps from the list to various points in the page.

Hello,
Thank you for the kind reply :)
“If the list is to be enclosed within the content of the page, then creating it will be more complicated, but you could again use page jumps from the list to various points in the page.”
Yes, this is the case. I do not need a template with a sidebar, but a sort of index on the left side of the page and clicking on the items open in the same page with the same background a text referred at that item. I don’t know if I am clear enough, but I mean if exist some element, maybe a call to action or a pop-up or anything else that can help me to get this final effect. Do you have any idea?
Thanks a lot.

It would probably be easier to use a theme that supports a sidebar for this. The theme would retain the page background and styling for each page. You could create a sidebar widget that lists all the pages you would want to load.
Bear in mind that, depending on the theme, you can configure the sidebar to only appear on certain page/post types. If, for example, you don’t want the sidebar to appear when displaying blog posts, you can set that option. Again, this may depend on the theme you are using.
Take a look at the “Page Attributes” support page for more information about how to do this.
Doing this without a sidebar, and strictly using the page itself, is going to be more complicated. If you don’t find a plugin that can do that, adding this capability may require you to customize how your site loads. This level of customization may not be available to you, depending which plan you are on.

Hi,
The website is not on-line at the moment, so I can not show you what I need. I think it is not possible create the page that I want without the right template. I tried to use a sidebar but it works scrolling down the page to the item clicked to another section of the page, but what I want is different: I want that the text/image appears in the same section changing with the item clicked.
For example:
A – clicking on A on the center/right side of the page will appear text.
B – clicking on B in the same area will appear another text
C etc.
D etc.I hope it could be clearer but I am almost sure I can not get this effect using my template.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Linda,
Thanks for the clarification. Unless there is a premium theme that I’m unaware of that has such a feature, then having an image in a page or post open a popup, or perhaps smoothly changing from image to text, such as you describe would only be possible with a plugin. The free, personal, and premium WordPress.com plans don’t allow plugins to be installed. Only the Business Plan allows the installing of plugins.
