how to create a menu in twenty fourteen theme?

    I would like to create a menu on the top of the page like this: home – articles- categories– gallery–etc. I have entered the menu and created a new one and saved the changes but I can´t see any change and I don´t know how to put the thing I wrote above because I only have the option to write the name of the menu but not what it contains. I would like to create two menus, the one on top and the left one, but I am not able to personalize them so I can write my own categories like the ones I´ve mentioned. It´s my first day with wordpress. thank you so much.
