How to create a new share button?
-
Two years ago, when I migrated to WordPress, it was possible to create new share buttons (I created one to share in joindiaspora).
But now, I can’t; because in the dashboard, in the “Settings” section, the option “Sharing” disappeared (and it was in the “Sharing” that was “Add a New Service” link)
I can go to a similar section, by the route Tools > Marketing > Share Buttons, but that section don’t have the option “Add a New Service”.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
While you can customize the sharing buttons, you can only use those already on the list. It’s not possible to add other services to it:
https://wordpress.com/support/sharing/#customize-your-services.
Are you sure you saw this option on WordPress.com and not in the self-hosted WordPress version?

Hi folks,
I can go to a similar section, by the route Tools > Marketing > Share Buttons, but that section don’t have the option “Add a New Service”.
There’s no button or section titled “Add a New Service” at the Marketing and Integrations page under the Sharing Buttons tab. Instead you add buttons in the section with the what might be called a heading that says “Allow readers to easily share your posts with others by adding sharing buttons throughout your site.”
The problem that @miguelmadeira is encountering might be the following. The available buttons are there, but they’re barely visible. At Marketing > Sharing buttons, the “Edit sharing buttons” button opens the sharing buttons editor. The available buttons are very faintly visible beside the buttons previously added. I find that running the cursor to the right of the last of those already added causes the available buttons to become somewhat more visible, though still quite faint. These gradations of faintness seem to be, inexplicably, design choices. So you add a button by clicking one of these ghosts, and then updating the page.

and then updating the page
I meant “and then saving the change,” by clicking the “Save changes” button at the bottom.

@miguelmadeira, let us know if you need more help with this. We’ve always had a specific set of services there, but we do add to them sometimes if a particular sharing button is in high demand.
Also as others have pointed out, you could probably extend that with a plugin. You’d just need a plan that supports that.

What I wanted was something capable of doing something like this: https://nicktux.com/2013/07/09/create-a-diaspora-share-button-wordpress-com/
I did that in 2020 (and my blog is a “.wordpress.com”, in a free acount), but now I can’t do something similar.
[I put also the question in the portuguese language forum, and there they said that option was discontinued, because of possible safety problems…]

Hello there,
What you’re seeing there in that post can be found here: https://ventosueste.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing in WP Admin view.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for providing the extension to the hidden WP-Admin Sharing Settings page. I’d been meaning to ask for that, and have added it to my WP-Admin page bookmarks.
However, isn’t it remarkable that the hiding of that page has led to the following situation:
- Adding a service not included in the default selection offered by WordPress.com is possible in the hidden WP-Admin Sharing Settings page, but NOT in the corresponding page in the WordPress.com (Calypso interface) page.
- Staff, at least some staff, is now telling users that a. “you can only use those already on the list. It’s not possible to add other services to it,” and b. “We’ve always had a specific set of services there.” In other words that it was never possible for the user to add a new service that isn’t included in the default WordPress.com chosen selection, AND (implicitly) that your memory is mistaken if it is telling you that once upon a time you had been able to add services chosen by you, yourself alone.

Adding a service not included in the default selection offered by WordPress.com is possible in the hidden WP-Admin Sharing Settings page, but NOT in the corresponding page in the WordPress.com (Calypso interface) page.
That is correct. The ability to add a custom sharing button is an artifact of the old wp-admin settings page. It isn’t something that will be added to the Calypso interface as that page will be eventually phased out along with adding a custom service. However, it hasn’t been phased out yet, so it’s still accessible if you have the direct link.
a.“you can only use those already on the list. It’s not possible to add other services to it,” and b. “We’ve always had a specific set of services there.” In other words that it was never possible for the user to add a new service that isn’t included in the default WordPress.com chosen selection
You aren’t able to add any other services in Calypso, which has only ever had the selected services there. It’s been true via that specific interface.
AND (implicitly) that your memory is mistaken if it is telling you that once upon a time you had been able to add services chosen by you, yourself alone.
It is still there if you have that specific link to the sharing settings via wp-admin and you’ve chosen to use the “classic interface” view:

But again, that’s a feature that is likely going away, so while it’s there today, it may not be in the future.
I hope that clarifies things.

@staff-heroponriki,
Hi. No, it didn’t really clarify anything, because you’ve essentially just repeated what I said, seeming to miss my points, which are again:
1. WP.com is hiding a feature in WP-Admin that it doesn’t want people to know about. It’s being hidden because it isn’t present in Calypso, and WP.com doesn’t want people to know that it’s still available in WP-Admin, if they’re clever enough to find it.
2. Some staff is incorrectly telling users, including the OP here, that not only does the feature not exist, but it never did. -
I’m sorry, you did clarify that the feature is eventually “likely going away,” but that was already kind of obvious, as was the fact that it was intentionally omitted from Calypso.
