I am working on a site for a school assignment. I am trying to build a page where users could log the books they read as part of the summer reading program. Could anyone point me in the right direction for creating such a page using only the free version of wordpress.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

It would be easiest to do it using a plugin (available from the Personal plan now) however, we can think of a simplified approach on a Free site:

    Option 1 – Use a Form + Comments
    Add a Form block
    The fields could be:

    • Student Name
    • Book Title
    • Author
    • Date Completed
    • Quick Review

How to View Submissions? – Form submissions arrive by email to the site admin. You can also see them in the dashboard.

If you want to display the books on a page, you will want to do that manually.

Option 2 – Let students log books using Comments

If you want the entries to appear publicly on the page:

    1. Make a new page.
    2. Add instructions at the top.
    3. Scroll down and turn comments ON for that page (in the right sidebar → Discussion → Allow Comments).

Students can then post a comment such as:

    Book: The Giver
    Author: Lois Lowry
    Student: Sarah
    Date Finished: July 10

This is often the best option when you want entries visible immediately without upgrading your plan.

Option 3 – Grant the students an Author role

Invite your students to contribute to the site and create posts. For example, the Author role would allow them to create posts and edit them but changing the site settings wouldn’t be available to them.

    I hope it helps!
