How to create a website similar to Gum Tree

    Hi I’d like to start a basic website similar to GumTree using word press. I have already signed up to a blog but I’m not sure how to progress with it. I was also wondering how I could provide people who enter their website with the ability to create their own account and then have their own adverts and personalised content etc.

    Is there a startup guide, for how to use wordpress to get your website up and running along with lots of other options such as personal account access etc.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    On wp.COM, we can use only the themes found under dashboard —> appearance —> themes. We can not upload themes from the internet.

    People cannot create their own account on your wordpress.COM blog. You would have to invite them and they would have to have, or sign up for a wordpress.COM account.

    Advertising is, except for a couple very narrow exceptions, not allowed on wordpress.COM. For the exceptions, see the last sentence under “Affiliate marketing blogs” in the bottom set of bullet points in the “types of blogs” link below.

    WordPress.COM, if you want to do something like gumtree.com, isn’t going to work for you. You will need to buy a domain name and self-host on a third-party hosting service such as godaddy or bluehost. Also, gumtree isn’t built on wordpress or any of the other CMS packages, it is a custom designed website. Although you can probably do something similar on the self-hosted version of wordpress, it is going to take quite a bit of probably heavy custom programming to do it.

    Thanks Guys!

    Basically I want to use WordPress as I’ve been told that it is a great starting place, I want to use it as a development space until I get things working properly. I don’t mind doing some heavy Code Hacking. Does this mean I need a .org account rather than a .com?

    If so, is there
    1. A set of instructions with regards to how to upload the files to the hosting space (I use Vision Internet)
    2. Instructions for how to access the CMS system once it is installed.
    3. Instructions for how to edit or hack things in the backend

    I have done some simple HTML Programming, and very basic PHP. Is there support within the WordPress community when people want introduce new functions? with the potential to be of benefit to other wordpress users?
