Hi,
I have tried creating a website but keep ending up with a blog site although I select “create website” what am I doing wrong?
Whether you choose “Start with a website,” “Start with a blog,” etc., there is no difference between the possibilities for the chosen WordPress.com theme. You’ve just selected one of the possible starting points. The primary difference between choosing “website” vs. “blog” at the point of creation is that the “website” choice will result in the front page being a static page, whereas the “blog” choice will result the blog page being the front page. Whether the front page displays a static page or the blog page may be changed at any time. See the Set a Static “Home” Page (Front Page) support page for relevant information and instructions.
Now, if you’ve chosen “Start with a website,” then the front page should be a static page rather than the blog page. The front page of https://myskills778.wordpress.com/ is a static page. In what way or ways is the site not like the website that you expect it to be?
I can no longer edit the work that I have done so far. How do I get back to edit mode?
See the Edit Posts Screen and Edit Pages Screen support pages.

If you don’t wish to have posts or a blog page displayed, then you may take the following steps:
1. Delete any default posts.
2. Don’t create any additional posts.
3. Delete the static page titled “Blog,” or change it’s status to draft if you think you might use at some time in the future.
4. Replace the third front-page featured page with something other than the blog page. See the Front-page Featured Pages section of the Dara theme guide for relevant instructions. -
Hi Musicdoc1. Thank you for your helpful response(s). My problem was that a colleague started me off on his PC and I floundered when I tried to develop the site. I tried to resolve by starting a new site from scratch but was concerned about the option for other people to edit, the post option, and so on. The next issue was I didn’t seem to be able to recover the website, either for viewing or editing. Following your guidance, I have managed to get everything the way that I wanted. I have also saved all your tips to my PC for the next time. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

You’re very welcome. Btw, is the username dembey also yours?
the option for other people to edit
Not sure what you’re referring to. When you are visiting your own site, you will see an edit link on all posts, pages, and other content types, but anyone who is not an administrator of the site will not see these links. Is that what you were referring to?

Hi
To confirm. Yes, username dembey is also me. When my colleague set up the website for me I did not realise that he had given me a username and a password. Probably explains why I couldn’t see both sites when I logged on.
You’ve gone straight to my concern again. I want to access my site as a visitor, , so that I know what it looks liked from that perspective. I have included a link on my site and want to confirm that it would work without being logged into the site.
Hope that this explains (I still see the “leave a comment” link although I have tried everything thing to get rid of it.) It still seems to behave like a blog, not a website That I want -
I have included a link on my site and want to confirm that it would work without being logged into the site.
Links that you’ve inserted into posts, pages, etc. will be visible and work for a visitor who is not logged into your account. I was referring only to the “Edit” links. Those are won’t appear when you’re logged out, and those who aren’t users on your site will see no “Edit” links.
Hope that this explains (I still see the “leave a comment” link although I have tried everything thing to get rid of it.)
Are you referring to the site https://myskills778.wordpress.com? I’ve been unable to find “Leave a Comment” fields or links on that site. Specifically, neither the static front page nor the post https://myskills778.wordpress.com/2017/10/29/111/ has a comment field or a link to comments displayed, and I have not detected other published posts or pages on the site.
However, if you find unwanted “Leave a comment” fields (or boxes) on posts or pages that I haven’t detected then these may be removed by following the instructions in the Enable and Disable Comments for Published Posts and Pages support page. By default comments are disabled on pages, so you should be concerned with posts in this regard.
For future posts and pages, see the Enable and Disable Comments for Future Posts and Pages support page. However, note that once again, even though the support page doesn’t mention it, comments will be disabled by default on each future page.
It still seems to behave like a blog, not a website
In what way or ways?

those who aren’t users on your site will see no “Edit” links.
Whether and where “Edit” links are visible on the site to a specific user will depend upon his or her user role. See the User Roles support page.

Hi. Thank you for being so patient. I followed your guidance on disabling comments, but I can’t shift it. The reason that the myskills778 site doesn’t show anything is because I completely wrecked it trying to create a static page. I am going to delete it, at least the name will become available for someone else to use. My latest effort is governorskillset. When I view as a visitor using an alternative browser, it is as you said – no edit options. But the “leave a comment ” remains and is capable of entry. I will not be collecting comments and have no wish to receive any. My intention is not that the site will be indexed on a search engine, but only available to those that are given the site address. Perhaps if I had spelt out every aspect of my intentions initially, I might have saved everyone a lot of time

Regarding your new site https://governorskillset.wordpress.com/ although everything is covered in the link provided by @musicdoc1 this is what needs to be done to remove the comments box for any future posts:
Click on “My Sites”. Scroll down on the left to “Settings”. Click “Discussion” on the top middle and then make sure the “Allow people to post comments on new articles” button is greyed out. I find this system confuses people seeing it for the first time but if the button is bright blue it means comments are enabled. The settings may be saved automatically but I always click the blue “Save settings” button anyway to make sure. For the one existing post that is already on your new site you will need to edit that post individually to remove the comment box. Click on “Post settings” on the right, scroll down to “More options” and scroll down again to make sure the “Allow comments” box is unticked then save by clicking the “update” button top right.

Hi. Thank you and @musicdoc1. I’m finally where I wanted to be. Even following your guidance, I got it wrong. I wasn’t always on the right page (or part of a page) and the “update” button wasn’t always visible to me. I also realised that by remaining “logged in” when calling up my site from an alternative browser, I still had edit rights so I was never going to get “visitor view”.
Its all sorted now, but I couldn’t have done it without the help of the forum. Thank you all -
All’s well that ends well! Glad to hear that you’ve got it sorted now, and that we were able to help. :)
Big thanks to @themagicrobot for the assist! :)
