How to create "Recent posts" link in navigation menu

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

This is destroying my sanity … I’ve spent days trying to figure out how to do this without success. All I want is to add three links in my navigation menu, to “Recent posts”, “Recent comments” and “Archive” that lead to the relevant pages …

It’s a site hosted on our own servers, though it’s laborious to get access to the command line or ftp, and I assume that the plugin/theme editor is disabled as there’s no “Editor” option under “Appearance”.

Is there a simple way to do this in WordPress ? It’s such a ridiculously common feature in content management systems that I’d be astounded if there isn’t, so I assume I’m being dumb here !

    Thanks for any help,

    David

    Hi @dmb0058,

All I want is to add three links in my navigation menu

To add links to your self-hosted site’s menu please see this guide:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Menu_User_Guide#Adding_Items_to_a_Menu

“Recent posts”, “Recent comments” and “Archive” that lead to the relevant pages

Such item groupings are usually added to Widget Areas as seen in this guide:

    https://wordpress.org/support/article/wordpress-widgets/#displaying-widgets

You stated that your site is hosted on our own servers, this means that it is using the open source WordPress.org software. These support forums are for sites hosted by WordPress.com.

For further help with your site, please ask over at the WordPress.org forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the open source WordPress.org software you can read this article:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I understand how to add pages/menus/etc. but the issue seems to be that the functionality to create links in the main menu to these parts of WP is simply missing from WP.

I’ve established that I can add 3rd party plugins to do this, adding the shortcode for each to a separate page and then adding these pages to the main menu. It is frankly bizarre that there’s no inbuilt way to do this, given that there are native widgets that render the same content (does anyone actually use widgets on mobile sites anymore ?).

I appreciate the difference between WP.org and WP.com now, again a weird arrangement but it is how it is :D I’ll close my account on this forum and use the correct one from now on, though TBH my client is happy to dump WP and move to Joomla so we’ll probably do that instead.

Thanks again for your advice, much appreciated.

    David
