How to create side by side columns?

I have am using Suburbia theme and it shows 2 large columns, how to I create this? My page is one column with a side menu, I have gone to help site and used widgets over and over and cannot figure out what to do? Not understanding how to use wordpress at all

Hello there! The Suburbia demo has split its most recent Posts into two separate columns on the front page. Currently, you have not published any Posts, so there’s nothing to split into columns.
Once you start adding more content to your blog like Posts, Pages, Images, etc, you will see the site start to take more shape. We can help you even further when there is more material with which to work.

The guide will walk you through the steps of setting up your site. I suggest starting with #4 on the Getting Started page, “Set up your public profile and Gravatar.” Then, you can move forward from there.
