How to Create Sub-Categories Under a Category
-
My Blog Site titled ‘Mabuhay US Veterans has been up and running now for over a year. In the past 12-months, I have gotten a lot of help from ‘The Team’ and, yet one issue that I believe that needs to be taken care of with my site, is creating a list of Sub-Category Headings under the Category Heading listed as ‘Construction Projects’ so as not to have my customers scroll down the list of numerous articles that I have listed under this one heading. The site page that I am referring to is: https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/
Please note, that I have done a lot of research on this issue with WordPress (such as: https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-add-categories-and-subcategories-to-wordpress/) and, nothing makes much sense to me, while reading it and re-reading what has been suggested.
So, thanks for whatever help that you may provide.
Respectfully,
Mabuhay US Veterans

The information you have been reading is about the open source wordpress.org. Information about categories on the wordpress.com platform can be found at https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/

staartmees,
Thanks for your response.
I have already visited the site that you directed me to and, yet it mentions on that site, how to Create or Delete a Category (which I already know how to do). Yet, there is no mention as to how to “Create a “Sub-Category to an Existing Category” using WordPress.com. What I am looking for is step-by-step instructions as to how to do this. Is there a different site that you can direct me to, that covers what I am asking about?
Under the Category “Construction Projects” 9 (shown on: https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/), there are multiple “Construction Projects” that I have written about. I would like to make it easier for whomever that is reading about what I have constructed, to list each “Construction Project” as a Sub-Category, so whomever can go direct to the source, instead of scrollng down the list of multitude “Construction Projects” listed.
Thanking you ahead of time.

You find info about subcategories under https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/#adding-categories

Once again, I don’t see anything that pertains to sub-categories on the site that you provided to me. I am an elderly 70+ individual, who is looking for step-by-step instructions as to how to add a sub-category underneath a category. Hence, this is the second time that you provided the same information and it looks like I will have to go elsewhere to obtain that information…possibly to the person who instructed me how to create categories for my Home Page and, maybe he has a better solution then what you have to offer.

Well, it seems that the individual that helped with how to create my menu (listing my categories in alphabetical order) won’t be able to help me, as the post that I communicated with him in January 2021, is closed for communicating. So, I guess I am out of luck and will have to retain what I have…which doesn’t help my fellow Retired U.S. Veterans that are looking for information as, I have listed so much, that I want to make it easier for them to find, instead of just clicking on the Main Category and scrolling down through the numerous articles that I have written.

Hi there,
To create a sub category, first go to Posts > Categories and create a click Add a New Category
Then, you should have the option to disable the category from being a top level category by switching this button off
This will now convert the category to a subcategory and you will be prompted to choose the parent category that you want the sub category to be under:
Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.
Thanks!

Thanks for your response.
I like the idea that you provided me with actual images, as that will make it much more simpler for me to comprehend. I will definitely try what you suggested and, will then get back with you.
One thing that I learned in the past two days, what I was used to using with WordPress, when I first constructed my Web / Blog site in May 2020, is not the same information with diagrams that I was used to. It seems that WordPress has now come out with an updated version in the past year, which requires those that already have a website, to go back and start all over again, if they wish to make updates to what they have been using in the past. Thus, in the former version that I used, it had blocks to list categories and slugs and, now I can’t locate this that I used in the past year.
When I honorably served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20-years, (over 30-years ago when I honorably retired), it was always stated “why change something that isn’t broken and has been working just fine up to this point in time?” So, it seems to me, that either someone within WordPress has decided that they may not have anything better to do and, have somehow created a re-vision and, now the images that I once was used to looking at, aren’t there anymore…meaning that I have to go back to school and, start asking more questions on this forum site, or possibly look closer at an updated Beginners Guide to familiarize myself, as to what has taken place since I first created my site.
Either way, I really appreciate the response that you provided with images and, as stated, I will get back with you soon, as to let you know what occurred at my end.
Warmest Regards,

I have to congratulate you, as you are one awesome individual that helped me immensely with what you suggested. Unsure why the “Other WordPress Member” aka “staartmees” couldn’t explain in greater detail as you did but, I am really impressed in what you provided!!
All I can say at this point in time, is that I wish you all the luck in all your future endeavors, as you certainly took care of my problem and, I am glad that you came along and read the issues that I was having, providing the “correct answer”, as everything worked just like you explained it to me.
Warmest Regards,

I hate to bother you with another question but, after I made some serious changes to my Home Page, indicating sub-categories (Child) taken from the category (Parent), is there any way to “change the color of the Parent Category” that is listed as “zero” to the right with the numerous sub-categories listed underneath, as shown on https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/? Meaning, everything is showing in green (when I am seeing it) and, it would be nice to be able to change the “Parent Category” to Black and some other color, so people don’t necessarily have to click on the Parent Category, when of course there is nothing showing in the Parent Category and does show in the Child (Sub-Category).
Thanks for your help!

Hi,
I’m afraid that wouldn’t be possible.
With some custom CSS, you could probably play around with colors, but for that, you’d need to upgrade to plan Premium. Here’s all the color options that are available on free sites:
https://wordpress.com/support/custom-colors/.
Please note that not all themes will allow you to add custom colors.

Thanks for your response.
I you had a chance to look at my website, then you have a good idea as to what I had asked, as with the Parent Category and the Child Category, there are all in “Green” and yet to break up the monotony, I thought that there might be a way to change a Parent Category to some other color such as “Black” while the Child Category would remain in Green, where individuals who visited my site, would realize what they need to click on correctly, allowing them to see the actual article that was being presented.
So, I guess I will have to remain with what I have (as I don’t see a reason to upgrade to a Premium Site, as I don’t wish to get paid for what I have created, as I am already retired several times and have sufficient funds to last me until I die) BUT, it was sure nice enough of darnelldibbles, to provide me detailed instructions as to how to break the monotony of all category titles into a Parent Category with sub-categories (Child Category(ies)) listed below.
So fresatomica, thanks again for your response, as it was quick and very much appreciated.

I followed your instructions, as to how to what you provided me with the website that you mentioned and was successful in changing the color of the titles and, the background effects, which came out nicely but, as you mentioned, I couldn’t change the Parent Category to look differently in color than the Child Category. Still, everything came out much better than what I had before.
So, thanks again!
