How to create tooltips in a Free plan?

    Hi everyone! I’m wondering if there is any way to create tooltips in my blog, where they would appear as superscripts (like a footnote) and the text would pop out if someone clicks on the number. Essentially I’m trying to recreate what was done in this article: http://what-if.xkcd.com/151/ (specifically things like the [1] after “thin layer on their surface.” in the second paragraph).

    I run a WordPress.com site on the Free plan, so I can’t edit any coding beyond what’s allowed in the HTML editor that’s provided to all users.
