How to customize appearance of posts under categories?

Hi, I have been using wordpress.com for the past month as a medium for my blog, but am having trouble customizing my blog exactly the way I want it.

To be specific, I want to change how my posts show up in the categories. Before posting, I select the category I want the post to be “filed” in. Thus, when a follower chooses, for example, the “fashion” category in my blog, they will see every post I’ve made that falls under the fashion category.

However, the ENTIRE post shows up (not just a little preview). This makes checking out all the posts under a certain category exasperating because in order to go from one post to the next, you have to scroll past the entirety of each post before that desired post. Does that make sense?

What I want instead is just a little “preview” of the post so that my followers have a choice of whether or not they want to read that specific post. In the preview, I want (a) the featured image, (b) the title of the post, and (c) a few lines of the post.

If anyone knows how to configure this, help would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

  • Hi there,

The theme you are using now does not have the option to show only an “excerpt” instead of the full post (some themes do, but not this one) so as a result the automated category pages show the full blog post by default.

However, you do not have to use the category pages that WordPress creates (which show the full post) you can instead create your own category pages by using the category filtering in the Blog Posts block. From what I can see you have already started to do this, on this page: https://momentsofblissbl0g.wordpress.com/beauty/

If you were to edit that page, and set the blog posts block to show only “Beauty” posts, it will give you the kind of page you are needing: One that shows only posts related to your Beauty category, and only shows an excerpt instead of the full post.

This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to set the Blog Posts block to show only content from the Beauty category.

You can view the at this link: https://d.pr/v/8ukLC4

As you can see in my video, if I set the block to use the “Beauty” category it shows only the 2 posts you have related to that topic.

Once you set up manual pages (as shown in my video) for every category, you can link those in your menu and visitors can see them instead of the pages you have linked in the menu currently.

    Hope this helps!
