How to customize theme for news site.

I am new to blogging and have limited knowledge of web design/programming.
After signing up and creating an account I’ve decided to make modifications to one of the existing themes in order to have it meet the needs of my project. Nothing complicated, I don’t think. Basically, this is what I am trying to do:
1. Modify the theme template so that anything related to comments will be removed. My idea is to create a news site people will access to read about the latest news (in a particular area of healthcare) instead of a blog that will allow users to post comments. For this reason anything or any links that refer to comments should be removed.
2. Increase the width of the main column where the posts are placed while reducing the small column where links and other information resides.
3. Modify the layout of the page by adding a header image on top of the (home) page. Some of the theme templates I have seen do have a header image but the one theme template I liked the most doesn’t have it (TRACTION). Is it possible to make these changes to the TRACTION theme ?
4. Change the blog’s address so that it closely matches my website’s address and makes it easier for people to find it. For example: http://www.site.wordpress.com modified or changed to http://www.news.site.com or http://www.site.news.com. Is it possible to do this ?
5. Remove any links or text displaying the WordPress name or any other name (as, for instance, the name of the company responsible for designing the theme.
I made attempts to find the contact e-mail for WordPress support but wasn’t able to find one. I hope this is the right place to obtain help and support. In case it isn’t would you know of an e-mail I can use to reach support ?

I have read what you posted and can answer all those questions except those on the Traction theme. However, IMHO I would be wasting my time and yours. You want to hack a theme and remove all evidence of the web designer and the fact it is a free hosted blog. that’s a “no can do” (not allowed). IMHO you need to hire a web host and get a free software install from wordpress.ORGand self host a blog.

1, 2, & 3 are possible with the CSS upgrade. You will need some CSS experience to do it though. On 1 though, you turn comments off on a site wide basis at settings > discussion in the dashboard. There will likely be a few left over bits you will want to remove via CSS.

5. Removing the links at the bottom of the themes is against the Terms of Service here and can get your site deleted or suspended.
