How to deactivate auto-hyphenation?
-
I don’t have a lot of wordpress savvy so I need a step by step guide.

Hi there. The only way to remove automatic hyphenation is to edit your theme’s CSS. See the staff reply in this thread for the code needed to do so: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/help-me-remove-hyphenation-from-site-if-possible?replies=12#post-1926107
You’ll only be able to edit the CSS if you have the Custom Design upgrade. See here for more information: http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

Thanks. Is the hyphenation only an issue with the twenty twelve theme? I’ve searched and complaints often revolve around that particular theme.

It’s not only Twenty-Twelve. I think most of the newer themes support auto-hyphenation. If you look at all the threads that have had the “hyphenation” tag added, you’ll see that users of several themes have looked for a way to disable it. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/hyphenation
I did look through them quickly, and it does appear there’s a way to disable it without using CSS, i.e. without an upgrade, using a line of HTML code in the text editor. But you’ll need to add that to every post: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-make-words-wrap-not-hyphenate?replies=17#post-1222296

I want to turn of hyphenation in the Highwind theme, but the Appearance Menu in my dashboard does not include “Editor” so I cannot access any CSS Style Sheets.
Can I ask WordPress to do this for me somehow?
Thanks,
Sarah

The CSS editor is in the Customizer, that is Appearance ->Customize in the dashboard. The support docs I linked above explains how to add the relevant code. If you need more help with that part, please post in the CSS Customization forum, as I don’t provide CSS support – I simply don’t know enough about it to help you with it: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postformHowever, you will only be able to make this change if you have the $99 a year Premium Upgrade Bundle.

I don’t know if staff can edit the CSS for you, but if they can, the staff in the CSS forum are the people for that. To make sure a staff member sees your post, add “modlook” to the tags when you create a new thread in that forum.

If you can’t afford the upgrade, they won’t be able to help you in that forum. To be clear: CSS changes can ONLY be made if you have the upgrade. That includes changes staff help you with.
If you don’t have the upgrade, your only option is to edit the HTML on a post by post basis as explained by @justpi in this thread: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-make-words-wrap-not-hyphenate?replies=17#post-1222296
