How to delete spam from FEEDBACK?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I try to delete the ‘spam’ from feedback – but keep the messages – I try ‘bulk action/apply’ but nothing happens. At this point I have 13,000-someodd spam feedback and would love to delete them!

Many thanks for any guidance you can provide. This is a separate issue from ‘comments’ which I have great success in managing.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Sarah,

Can you try the following steps?

    1. Navigate to your Feedback Spam folder here:

      https://sarahwbartlett.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=spam&post_type=feedback

    2. From that page, use the top checkbox to select all messages as shown here:

      http://d.pr/i/VVX7

    3. Under the “Bulk Actions” menu, select “Move to Trash”. Then, click “Apply”.
    4. Navigate to your Trash found here:

      https://sarahwbartlett.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=trash&post_type=feedback

    5. Select all of the messages again
    6. In the “Bulk Actions” menu, select “Delete Permanently”

That should delete the messages for good!

Just a note, you can control how many messages appear on the screen at once. Since you have quite a few Spam messages, it might take awhile to flip through all of the pages to delete them all. You can use the Screen Options menu at the top of the page to allow more items to be visible on one page. Just change “20” to a larger number as shown here:

Let me know if you run into any trouble!

That method only allows me to eliminate one page at a time – there are 611 of them!! Is there no way to go from first to last and delete?

BTW your screen shot doesn’t show anything but a couple of checkmarks.

    Let’s keep trying!!
    And thankyou

    Got it!
At 100 per page, it’s just 120 pages; much better than 600 :-)

    Many thanks.
From now on, I’ll be on the lookout for feedback spam. Never even knew this page existed.

    Thanks much.

    OK, two questions:
Is there a setting to DELETE SPAM FEEDBACK after a certain length of time?

    AND

Did something unusual happen in cyberspace recently? I’m still deleting away but some 4,000 deletions in, I’m noticing they are all within the past five days.

    Hey Sarah!

    See my answers below:

Is there a setting to DELETE SPAM FEEDBACK after a certain length of time?

We don’t have that feature in place yet! Currently, Spam feedback requires manual deletion.

Did something unusual happen in cyberspace recently? I’m still deleting away but some 4,000 deletions in, I’m noticing they are all within the past five days.

That is an odd number of feedback spam. It looks like a majority of the posts were a result of this URL:

    http://sarahwbartlett.com/2013/05/16/weekly-writing-challenge-using-contact-forms/

Can you confirm this from what you saw (looks like you already deleted the vast majority of feedback spam)?

It could be that random visitors from the challenge were visiting your blog and filling out the form.

Not from the challenge – all 12,000+ spam were porn or pharmacy-related. But I DID notice that they came through that post with the contact form. Did any other WP challengees report a similar issue when they responded to that prompt with the use of a contact form?

I’m definitely going to delete that post right now. But it’s curious, don’t you think? ironic, too – I never before or since tried using a contact form in a post. Perhaps I did it wrong …

Anyway, I do appreciate your following up with me. And it would be interesting to see if anyone else had this problem.

    Thanks.

    Hey Sarah!

I haven’t heard of anyone else with the same problem. It really shouldn’t be a problem to place a contact form within a post either. I think what may have happened is that your post spread a bit more since it had a pingback to a challenge post. This resulted in a bit more traffic than usual and perhaps more individuals you don’t know filling out the contact form for whatever reason. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on this and see if it’s a recurring issue!

The odd part is, ALL 13,000+ feedback comments were from 2/12 to 2/25. Even as I was emptying them out I received an additional 20 or more. Of course, deleting the post solved that problem.

Just curious, as the challenge/post was quite old – maybe a year or more.

I appreciate your responsiveness. Just curious whether I set up the contact form wrong, since it attracted such a wide net of porn and pharmacy-related responses. Never happened to any other post.

Anyway – all’s well at this point. Thanks again.

    Hey Sarah,

I don’t think it’s anything you did on your end. Perhaps the post randomly picked up a bit of extra traffic and increased the amount of people that filled out the form. Still, that would be a bit weird. For now, we’ll treat this as an anomaly, but if it happens again, please let me know!

    You bet, Jeremy.

    And thanks again.

Not a problem. Happy to help!
