How to delete widgets that are not listed on dashboard

Help! When reading my blog (Under the Influence theme) both the tag cloud widget and the archives widget are in the footer area. When I go to widgets on my dashboard, they are not listed. I want to delete them from the footer area. Is this possible?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m sorry this is happening to you. You cannot remove a widget that you do not have access to in your dashboard. Please go to screen option in the top right hand corner of your Admin page and select all the modules there for display. Then go here > Appearance > Widgets and see if the widgets in question are appearing there or not.

No, they are still not showing up under > Appearance > Widgets.

I think this may be a case of viewing a default theme and sidbar displays which means they aren’t actual widgets at all. To remove the default footer items you add your own widgets. See here for more: > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/09/28/the-no-widgets-paradox/

THANK YOU ever so much! That really helped! Thanks also for responding so promptly! I had just switched to this theme the other day. First time that’s ever happened to me after changing themes.

When we switch themes the widgets we have been using migrate into the “inactive widgets” box. Unless we drop and rag those into place then what we see is the default display for the new themes and that’s why happened here.

As your are new to wordpress.com I’d like to recommend a tutorial. The Learn WordPress.com tutorial is divided into progressive levels and presented as a series: http://learn.wordpress.com/

Best wishes with your blogging. :)
