How to deny access to a browser that sends spam bots to my wordpress site?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been receiving multiple hits to one of the pages on my site and it literally kills my site’s uptime/traffic. I’ve been frequently seeing the 500 internal server error because of this spammy bot (from china) sending multiple requests to one of my pages – more than hundred requests in a minute, every minute.

The bot seems to use several IP addresses to perform this(possibly a ddos attack) and I’ve blocked more than 50 so far. But the bot uses the same browser to do this and I’m convinced to deny access to the browser now. (I don’t see any real/human readers from this browser so the traffic is safe!)

This is the browser I want to block/deny access to : Mozilla/4.0 (compatible: MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1

I either want it to see a 403 error or a bad request whenever the bot tries to access my site.

How do I do that by editing my .htaccess file?

I tried this code (found it in another forum) and it doesn’t seem to work! (Sorry, I’m poor at coding. Will really appreciate some help!)

    RewriteEngine on
    Options +FollowSymlinks
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*Mozilla/4.0 (compatible: MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1.*
    RewriteRule .* – [F]

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello @lancycv
http://www.makeupandbeautyhome.com/ is not hosted on WordPress.COM. Also, it is using the WordPress.ORG software package.

You have posted your issue in the wrong forum. This forum only supports the sites hosted on WordPress.COM and not elsewhere.

Both(WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG) are different products. You can find out the differences between them here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

To get help, please post your question on the WordPress.ORG support forum: https://wordpress.org/support/

We are really sorry that we cannot help even tough we want to. Hope you issue gets resolved ASAP.

    Thanks!
