How to disable Block Editor and return to Classic Editor?

  • Unknown's avatar

    My Settings does not offer a choice to switch between Block or Classic Editors. By mistake I guess I followed the popup prompts for Block but I hate it and want to return to Classic. How do I do that? No options anywhere in Settings or Tools or Plugins to choose Classic Editor. Please help!! Paula 10-21-2020

  • Hi there,

    We have retired the standalone classic editor in favor of the newer block editor: https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/08/13/the-classic-editing-experience-is-moving-not-leaving/

    As the above news article mentions, if you prefer to use the older editor we recommend the classic block, which is a block you can add to “insert” the classic editor inside of the newer block editor, and has the familiar formatting tools you are used to: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

    We also have tips for making the move from the classic editor to blocks, which is where we will be releasing new features as they are added https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/

    Hope this helps!

    Jerry, I read through your links but cannot find my dashboard, cannot get the “classic” block to work. I don’t know what any of the icons mean. Is there some kind of tutorial I can get? I received no email telling me this classic editor was no longer available. Honestly I don’t have time to learn a new format process. Please, I need someone to help me. I’m in a terrible mess now. I want the classic back but don’t know how to get it. The instruction on the links are not clear. Please help!! Paula.

  • You can use https://wordpress.com/wp-admin/ to reach your dashboard on our severs.

    We started the transition to blocks about two years ago, so most of the communication about changes would have been around then.

    I’d recommend trying it, and letting us know what specific issues you’re running into, so our developers and designers can take care of those fixes.

    I’m going to jump in here. When software companies change things, they never seem to take into account that people like the familiar. I am visual, it’s totally changed and I can’t get oriented with blocks. I want to sit down and write, not have to spend time searching for tools.

    I agree with Andrea that searching for tools is an interruption. I never got an email from WordPress that Classic was being retired, and was not given any tutorial to figure it out. Trying to insert the Classic into the Block is no easy task. These tech people assume everyone understands icons and tactics and many of us do not. I’m very disappointed in WordPress in eliminating the Classic Editor. This has been damaging to my all my work and delaying my blog posts for this month so I can figure out how to proceed smoothly.

    Thank you Supernovia for the link about dashboard. My problem is once I am working in a New Post screen, how do I go back to the dashboard? I can’t find an access? Can you tell me how to move out of the New Post screen into the Dashboard? I’m totally lost.

    @ppc910
    Go to your WP Admin (https://example.wordpress.com/wp-admin)→ Posts→All the posts→ and…

    Cheers.

    Galois, I do not have the options for “classic” or “block” under Posts. Only Add New, Categories, Tags.

  • You need to look for the dropdown to the right of that:

    Thank you, Rootjosh. Yes, that worked. I so appreciate this! Looks like you have solved my problem. Bless you!!

    @ppc910
    My image is the same, but it is in spanish (that is my language). 😉

  • @andrealyeska thanks for that feedback. I agree any visual changes make things a lot harder for some types of people. I tend to be very visually oriented myself, and though I do tend to have an easier time “searching” I realize that’s a speed bump. I know there’s something to be said for muscle memory as well.

    The block editor is meant to solve issues that folks have struggled with for years (sit setup, layouts, ability to embed this or that, as a few examples) though it makes sense that those who were perfectly happy with the old setup can find the changes rough.

    If you’ll let us know which features you use often and can’t find easily, we may be able to help with that.

    Thank you for this question. I have only been on WordPress for a couple months, but have found it to be unnecessary to have the block. It takes up so much more time than it should.
