How to disable email notifications after switch to Mailchimp

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi folks,

I have a list of email subscribers. Now I want to start using Mailchimp to send out notifications about new posts, etc. I know I can import my email subscribers to Mailchimp but the question is: How can I ensure that my current email subscribers will stop receiving default notifications? This is to avoid the situation where they will get double notification one default and the other from Mailchimp.

    Thanks in advance!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Once you have confirmed you have added all followers email in Mailchimp, you can remove them from your email follower list by clicking on the x Remove link you see net to each person on the list here: https://wordpress.com/people/email-followers/tommysoutdoors.com

Please note that you have quite a few people who follow your site directly via their WordPress.com account, listed here: https://wordpress.com/people/followers/tommysoutdoors.com

Because these followers have not provided an email address (they clicked the follow button we show only to logged in WordPress.com users) they are not listed as email followers, and cannot be easily migrated to other services. They can be “removed” but first you may want to post to your blog announcing your Mailchimp, and asking followers to sign up manually. It’s not possible to discover the email address of WordPress.com followers, so they cannot be moved in that way.

    Thanks for the answer!

  • Hi there,

Just to add to what Jerry said above, keep in mind that WordPress.com subscriptions on your site is not in your control, but in your subscribers’. So while you can definitely remove them from your email followers list if you want, you cannot prevent them from signing up again if that’s how they prefer to be notified of new posts on your site.

I’d suggest you rather just leave it up to them – if you publish a post like suggested above, include instructions to unsubscribe from the WordPress.com notification emails (just click the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email) so your followers can do that themselves if they prefer.

Thanks! Does removing the ‘follow blog via email’ widget not going to prevent them from resubscribing?

  • Hi @outdoorspodcast, it would prevent them re-following via email. They could still follow your site using the Reader or an RSS feed, and our reader does offer an option for email notifications of new posts.

  • Actually I take that back; you can see here how they could still follow by email if they wanted to:

I think if you make your mailchimp subscription more obvious, though, they’re likely to follow that way unless they found your site through the reader in the first place (as many followers tend to do.)
