How to discover the best picture size

  I was recently appointed as a contributor to this site http://www.lospaziodellapolitica.com/ and noticed there’s a big problem with the quality of the pictures displayed in the homepage banners.

  How can I find out the ideal picture size and ratio that would fit that kind of banner?
