How to display posts in snippets?

    Hi! I have a question about how to format my home page so that each blog post shows a snippet/the beginning of the post, so that readers who wish to view the whole thing could click on that post to read the entire thing.

    I’m hoping to achieve a look where it’s not just reverse chronological order of each long post, but say, 3-4 snippets of the latest posts appear in reverse chronological order and the read can choose which to delve into. Is there any way to do this?

    Hi,

    Here are two different ways to accomplish your goal.

    Method 1:
    a. Use a More Tag in each new post to display an excerpt of the post content on the blog page.
    b. At Reading Settings, set the number of posts to display on blog pages to your desired number (e.g. 3 or 4).

    Method 2:
    a. Choose a theme which displays post excerpts by default. In the August 2013 forum topic Themes with post excerpts?, timethief provides a link to a “list of active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content.” However, note that the list of such themes was also posted in a forum topic in August 2013. Some of the themes included in the list might be retired since then, and don’t necessarily still have this feature.
    b. At Reading Settings, set the number of posts to display on blog pages to your desired number (e.g. 3 or 4).

    Indeed, that list is out of date and many of those themes are retired.

    The good news is we have a showcase view to find themes that display excepts on the blog!

    Hi kathrynwp,

    Thanks. I had looked for that filter before responding and didn’t find it. I don’t see “blog excerpts” in the filters displayed by clicking the More icon, and was unaware to the Theme Showcase Tags page.
