How to display single post, (full post, not just excerpt) on static pages

I have static pages which display the different post categories and use the display posts shortcode. What I want to do is have the ability to show a single post (like the most current post) full post as the content of the category page, then display all of the other past category posts below that using the display posts shortcode as normal. We were thinking that we would just edit the page and put the post content in as the page content, then move it to a post when we were ready to replace that page content. But that messes up the comments and the publish date, etc. If we used the display posts shortcode and specify a specific post ID, we could do that at the top of the page, then list the others at the bottom of the page but i can’t get the full content of the post with the display posts shortcode. Is there a way to do this on wordpress.com?

The way posts are displayed on dynamic category pages, archive and tags pages (permalink titles and full posts, permalinked titles only, permalinked titles and excerpts, permalinked titles and excerpts and thumbnails) is theme dependent. We cannot access and edit the templates underlying our themes. In most but not all themes what you see on the front page or main page for posts is what you get on the dynamic archives, categories, tags pages.

I am not asking for it on dynamic category pages, archive pages, or tags pages. I am asking if there is a way to do it on wordpress.com static, theme-independent pages. Can you help me with that?

Static pages are not the same as dynamic category pages.
Only dynamic category, tags and archives pages will automatically update when we publish posts.

Different themes display category pages differently. No upgrade changes that. Change themes if you want full posts on the category pages. That’s the ONLY way.

    Hi @katybeavers,

I understand what you are trying to do: Use a short code or something similar to pull in the full text of a post above where you are using the display-posts short-code to display the summaries of other posts. I’m afraid that functionality is beyond the power of the short-code.

I’ve spent some time trying to think of a work around, but other than trying a new theme that gives you more options, I’ve not come up with anything.

You’ve done a lot of work already making your site look the way you want it to, so I don’t know if you are open to trying a new theme, but if you are, I’d be happy to help you pick one that is a better fit for your vision for your site.

Let me know what you think and we’ll go from there.

lizthefair, i think we will be okay, we used that theme because it best fit the customer’s vision. I think they will be okay with it once they start accumulating a few more posts under each category so that it the static pages don’t look so barren. You helped it look a little richer in content with the thumbnails and formatting the shortcodes and we put some images at the top of each category for filler until the content fills out more. They are not complaining so we’ll hold off on looking for a new theme for now. Thx!
