How to display text within image on grid layout page

I can’t seem to work out how to create the Edin look (as they have in their preview) with a front page with text written on top of the image and then a grid style layout below that image and then other pages below that.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

According to Automattic (Kathryn), it looks like you need to add some text widgets (to the three front-page widget areas) to get the front page looking more like the demo.

What you are looking at is the Front Page layout:
Template includes three optional featured page areas, three optional widget areas, and a big leading image with a call-to-action (see the image at the top).
If something is not clear, in addition to posting in the forum, you can also search previous forum threads about this theme by putting Edin in the search bar at the top of the forums or by clicking on the Edin tag I’ve added to this thread.
