How to do draft of website but not have it go live?

Help. I’m a WordPress newbie.
I want to use WordPress for a new website. I have registered a domain name but it is just parked for the moment. I want to be able to prepare my website but not have it live until I like the way it is and after a certain date (when ill turn it on manually).
I have created other websites using other tools so I’m not a complete idiot but I cannot find anywhere that explains how to do what I want to do.
Just point me in the right direction, I’m happy to read and learn. But I just can fine a “sandbox” type draft workspace.

Make the blog visibility private – do not make each and every post and page private as well because that is unnecessary when the blog visibility is set to private. -

Here are some things you ought to be made aware of. You cannot build or use your own custom theme built from scratch at WordPress.com.

The only themes we can use are those found here > Appearance > Themes
This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template and we cannot access the underlying files and edit templates or themes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/There are two free themes, Sandbox and Toolbox designed to allow maximum flexibility for CSS editing and creating new “skins”. Toolbox is more modern and includes a lot of support for CSS3 and HTML5, so it is really only limited by your skills and knowledge.
If you have CSS editing experience the upgrade will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but will not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to WordPress.com. Many thanks for very prompt reply. I will upgrade to Pro and am happy with (for the moment) with themes available. Am launching new product. If successful then I can hire someone to do all this.

Good morning world. For timethief.
I have read much of what you have suggested and now have some more questions, but they are of a more general nature. I have come to realise that I may be putting the cart before the horse in some matters. I still want to do a blog and a website, etc. but there are some basic decisions I must make before I proceed.
My question is: should I continue to post the questions on this thread, start a new thread, or attempt to discuss them with you “offline” – meaning directly. You appear to have the knowledge and experience to intelligently answer my questions directly yourself.
What is the proper was to proceed. I have little experience in the use of forums, etc. and want to behave properly for all concerned.
Your thoughts would be appreciated in this matter. Thanks. -
The best way is to search teh forums for answers to your questions prior to asking, since so many have already been answered here. If you don’t find anything relating to your question, ask it in a new thread unless you find a thread that IS related but not resolved; in that case, add it to that thread.
