How to do SEO on Google?

Now doing search engine optimization is very popular. I read some books about how to do SEO on google, but it is not easy for me to get good ranking of my website and keywords.
Someone said that the ranking would get better if you do some links to your website, so I think looking for some related forums or creating high quality blogs could be a good solution. And then I created this blog. However, what I did on this blog seems not productive. I’m doubt that the way in which I am doing SEO is wrong.

Yes, the way you are doing SEO is wrong. Furthermore, a WP.com site whose whole reason for being is to drive traffic to a different site is in violation of the Terms of Service and liable to get suspended.

So, what should I do to get traffic to my site? I am a newer, still needing to learn more! Hopefully you can give me right direction! :)
