How to download my entire site onto my computer?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi
I have a huge WP site with about 13 gb of images uploaded over 4-5 years. I now am thinking of moving to another host provider and creating a new site somewhere else, using the same images.
How do I download my entire site’s images to a folder on my computer?
    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

We don’t have any way to download your entire media library on WordPress.com. However, if you create an export file at My Site ->Settings ->Export, and import that file to a self-hosted WordPress website, all your media files should also be transferred to the self-hosted site’s media library.

So if you are planning to still use the WordPress software at the new hosting provider, that is all you need to do.

If you are not planning to use WordPress, you might still be able to import the file to another service in the same way, in which case your images should still be transferred. Or once you import your content to a self-hosted site, you can download your full media library from there using a plugin.

kokkieh thanks for the reply, I was thinking of using a https://www.hostforweb.com/ site and they use the cpanel to set up their sites. Would it still work if I exported all my sites images the way you explained above to cpanel on hostforweb’s servers, under a new hostforweb domain and using only hostforwebs tools no longer WP?

Also once I exported my WP site to new host would my original WP site no longer exist? Thanks.

But then at the end of the day they a bit pricey, prob works out way way more expensive than WP for less staff members help and more or less the same options features, but I’m not sure if it’s worth giving them a go. Any tips? Re hostforweb.com, are they good or not, for the same thing just higher priced, maybe you get more independence though, I’m not sure at the moment, any tips would be good. WP or hostforweb? Thanks!

cPanel is your host’s admin interface where you access your site’s database and files. But your site itself will still be built using the self-hosted WordPress software, and you’ll still have a WP-Admin dashboard to manage your site itself, i.e. your posts, pages, etc. That is where you’ll import the export file.

Your WordPress.com site won’t be affected at all. It will only cease to exist if you actually delete it on our end, or you can simply take it offline by setting it to private, but in either case you should only do this once the import has completed on hostforweb’s side.

I have no experience with hostforweb, so I’m not able to answer this. I can tell you that most hosts for self-hosted WordPress don’t support the WordPress software itself. So their support will help you with your account, but they won’t help you with your site.

Advise please, I clicked on Export and “all content” 2 days ago for the site newartoldart.wordpress.com and was told I’d get emailed the download zip but still nothing in email yet. Any ideas how long a largish site takes to download, I’ve got about 4GB of images? Thanks.

Should take less than 24 hours, sometimes large sites have issues or the exporter can hang up, since Kokkieh is already helping you, he will check this thread when he comes back into the forum, he can reset the exporter for you or give you hints on how to break a large site into easier bites

  • @artmixes

We emailed you the export file around 18 hours ago, and I don’t see any failure message in our email logs, so it went through. Can you please check that it didn’t perhaps land in your spam folder? If you can’t find it anywhere, let me know and I can send you a new one.

Please also note that the export file does not contain any of your images. It only contains links to the images that are stored in your media library. When you import that file to another site it will cause your images to be imported to the new site, but only if your site here is still online and the images still in the library. Please don’t delete anything from your site here until you’ve imported the file at your new host and made sure all your media files have been transferred.

Nice to see you again :) Long time…

@kokkieh – hello & hope all is well with you – just have not been up to the forum for a while – but had a rant about the new way the navigation has been changed with the classic dashboard in another thread and just could not help but take a bit of a shot at some low hanging help

Hi Kokkieh sorry for the late response, I didn’t receive an email ever with the export file despite trying twice to get the export, HOWEVER it is no longer necessary as I found it can be done far easier elsewhere. BTW I’m staying with WP it’s a great company and I doubt I’ll migrate to another site as prices are mostly too high elsewhere.

And thanks for the advice, thanks also auxclass.
