You can not earn via your free blog here on wordpress.com. You can not run advertisement on your free hosted blog. You can earn money by running ads on your self hosted wordpress.org, which itself too slow means to earn money where your input is always more than your output.

There are many conditions with word ads. You should have a domain name and the age of the domain which matters too. You can not avail wordads for a brand new domain. Besides there are some good bloggers who have less than 20,000 page views per month.
So it is not recommended.
