We cannot edit themes or templates on wordpress.com blogs. You can achieve this is with CSS editing.
If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.
Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.
If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

So , am I understanding you correctly; if I purchase a theme from wordpress, I cannot move it by ftp to my wordpress.com blog, even though it is a wordpress product?
-
That’s correct. All wordpress themes available on the internet or in the wordpress.ORG theme gallery at wordpress.ORG are coded to run wordpress.ORG software. Our software is different. We do NOT have FTP access to wordpress.COM blog and we cannot upload themes in any event. The only themes we can use are here > Appearance > Themes

There are two different types of wordpress blogs. Those hosted here on this multi-user platform which has restrictions and those that are self-hosted. There is a big difference between the two. We all share the same underlying wordpress files and theme files. We don’t each have a stand alone installation. That means any issues introduced by one blogger could possibly effect all of us.
The themes used here have to be reviewed for security issues (and any of those addressed) and modified to work here within the restrictions of this platform (some stuff has to be removed typically). Other stuff has to be added to the themes to support the unique features that are built into this platform that don’t exist on the self-hosted version. A standard theme downloaded off the internet won’t work here. You would find that many standard features here would not be available to you with a downloaded theme.
The following support document explains the differences between .COM and .ORG.

Sorry, I have read all of the above. When I made the purchase, because it was a wordpress product, I (incorrectly) assumed that it would automatically be compatible with their platform on .com, since it was their stuff. Thanks for confirming what I feared to be the case. I will quit racking my brains out. The support doc for ftp process from wordpress for the purchased themes do not make it clear, especially before the purchase.
Thanks again.

I’m so sorry you didn’t understand that wordpress.ORG and wordpress.COM are completely separate and run on different software before you purchased the wordpress.ORG theme. :(
