How to edit footer in Superhero theme
-
Hi all,
Bit of a noob here, so please be patient. I’m putting together a website for a charity I work with: http://vanstreetsoccer.wordpress.com. Everything is going swimmingly, apart from one thing: the footer. As you can see, it’s an ugly little thing, with nothing but some off-centre generic text. The Superhero theme doesn’t allow for editing the footer, so I’ve upgraded and gone wading into the CSS stylesheet.
The strange thing is that even the most basic pieces of CSS don’t seem to actually change the footer. It appears kind of hardwired (although this might just be me being stupid). I don’t want to do anything too crazy: ideally just make it about twice as tall and insert some gifs (our sponsors) into it in a simple row. Failing this, I’d like to just remove the crappy text. One thing I don’t want is for the footer to be sticky.
Anyone got any ideas?

You need to read these:
11. Attribution. Automattic reserves the right to display attribution links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com,’ theme author, and font attribution in your blog footer or toolbar. Footer credits and the WordPress.com toolbar may not be altered or removed regardless of upgrades purchased. http://en.wordpress.com/tos/
Custom design – Frequently Asked Questions
May I remove credit links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com’, theme, font, or toolbar links? All WordPress.com bloggers are required to maintain the credit links, even our VIP bloggers. Please do not hide or alter text or links for the footer credits or the toolbar. Modifying the style of the footer text (i.e. colors and font size) is fine as long as it’s still readable. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

Hi timethief,
Thanks for the swift response. Am I within my rights to modify the size/colour/style of the footer itself, as well as the font colour and size?
Also, it’s not advertising; we’re a non-profit organization who receive help from a few small companies (mostly non-profits themselves), and wanted to acknowledge their contribution in a little ‘thanks’ section. “Sponsor” was probably not quite the right word: at no point has any money changed hands, nor will it. I won’t be directing anyone to any merchant sites, or even any sites at all for that matter. Does this change anything?
Thanks.

Let me get this right. You want to put irrelevant links that have nothing to do with the theme design or the hosting but are aimed to promote non-profit websites in the footer of the theme in order to drive traffic to them.
-
The links aren’t irrelevant; if they were, I wouldn’t want them in my footer. And they aren’t aimed at promoting (or driving traffic to) anything; they are a way for us to acknowledge a debt of gratitude as an organisation.
Can you help me with editing the footer? If not then this is a waste of both our time.

Just saying – seen several sites suspended for that – smaller type and/or blend the color into the background
My theory is that nobody much reads the footer anyway. The VIP sites start at $ 30,000/ year and they are REQUIRED to keep the footer
Try a theme that has room for footer widgets to push the footer down a bit, make your static page a bit longer to push the footer down. A footer Widget also allows you to put images and other text at the bottom of the Page / Post

I’ll modlook this for staff to have an official response, but IMO only, as long as the footer credits and links are still legible and functional, there should be no problem with making them more attractive.
As for giving credit and thanks to other companies for contributing to your organization, (again, my opinion only), that doesn’t sound like a breach of the terms of service to me.
In fact I was considering doing something like that as the non-profit I work for approaches the end of its fiscal year: a page or widget thanking all the individuals and businesses who have contributed time, money, materials, and services over the past year. It’s still “twinkle in the eye” stage, but there are lots of folks who do appreciate a public acknowledgement. But, again, my opinion, I wouldn’t put that sort of thing into the footer…

You be welcome – me personally the footer does not bother me and given that it is part of the TOS I have not desire to even reduce things by a single pixel
Also all the suggestions I gave above are free – not CSS custom upgrade required

I’m a minimalist. I cringe when I see big blocks of blah, blah, blah, etc. studded with associated links in footers.
I use a Links page (or Links widget) to make my readers aware of the directly related resources sites that I recommend visiting.

Thanks, 1tess. I look forward to the official response!
