How to edit header on search page. Can it be done.
-
I am using the WordPress Free Plan. It is doing the job fine for me. My theme is Twenty-Ten. I am not an experienced programmer nor do I want to mess around with hacking the configuration files of WordPress’s Program. As it is the Free Plan, plugins are out of the question so I have to work with what ever editing options WordPress has given me. There that is all the pertinent information I can give, I think.
Now the question: I just set up a search widget on my page. I found that it works fine but it takes me to a page with a generic header image. I would like to replace the featured image to that page with one of my own banners. I can do this on any other page on my site. (https://westmanjams.wordpress.com/) But this page does not show up as a page or post, so that makes things challenging. There are edit options on this page, but they are all for the pages listed from the search and not for the search page itself. The questions are: Can I edit the header, banner image? If so how do I go about doing this? Am I missing something obvious?
Well that’s it. I hope I explained it in an understandable fashion. I am not a programmer, but I can deal with some html code when I need to. Thanks for your time and whatever help you can offer.

Pages like Search, Author, Category and other archive pages that are created by the software, use the site-wide custom header that you upload at Customizer>Header Image. It’s not possible to customize those archive pages’ headers separately like you can on static pages that you create.
However, looking at your site, your search returns page seems to be using one of the theme’s default header rather than your customized header.
Did you upload a custom header in the Customizer>Header Image for your entire site or only for each page of your site using the Featured Image (including your static front page)?

As an aside, it’s not possible for WordPressdotcom users to “hack” the theme’s PHP or HTML configuration files regardless whether its a free site or has an upgrade Plan.

To answer your question, while editing each individual page, I selected a custom feature image to replace the header image on that page. The entry page has my group’s logo and even that banner may be occasionally replaced with a more seasonally themed logo banner.
Each individual page has a banner that represents the topic being discussed or illustrated on that page. These banners are replaced in the same fashion as the main page. It is quite easy to do while creating or editing any page. That was what I had hoped could be done with the search page but… I can’t actually edit the search page, as far as I can tell. On that page I can edit any pages listed in the search results but there seems to be no option to edit the search page itself. That is what I presume you are telling me.
It is a pity. I think it would be nice to have a search themed header at the top of that page, but I guess I can live with out it. The function of the page works splendidly. It is only it’s appearance that I felt could have been improved.
Thank you for your prompt feedback.

That is correct; you can’t upload a customized header directly to pages like Search, Author, Category and other archive pages that are created by the software.
But you didn’t answer my question about whether you uploaded a site-wide custom header at Customizer>Header Image, which would appear on those pages (Search, Author, Category and other archive pages)

Ok. I tried what you suggested and it worked. Am I to assume that, should I ever encounter another page of a similar type, it will also have the same header image? If so, then this is a one time solution for this page. and any other such page will have to share the same header image? As of this time, it doesn’t matter because I have no other similar type page on my website that I can’t modify individually. I may, however, encounter said page in the future and have to make a compromise that they both may share the same Header Image. Is that correct?
