How to edit replies to other threads
-
I may be being incredibly stupid here, but I’ve tried everything. I’m trying to reply to a thread. I have an account. The reply box at the bottom of the thread has NO text edit functions above it. There appears to be no reply to post function. If I open write post I’m simply transported back to my home page & the post is posted there. How can I reply to someone & be able to properly quote them & edit my post. I’m getting very frustrated with this.

I’d like to try to help you but I cannot determine exactly what you mean. Could you please provide the link to the thread you are having difficulty replying to and then we will work on a solution from there?

Hello timetheif. Thanks for your offer of help. I E-mailed the support & they were not sure either as to what I meant until I explained it more clearly. I was posting a comment(s) at the end of a thread on another blog. The comment box is simply a blank box to input text & post a reply. WordPress does not support functionality for text edit controls. The best I could do was use & to italicize quoted text. No matter, I would have thought something more substantial would have been available. But anyway the matter is resolved, thanks.

I think this is to ensure that control over a blog remains with the blog owner, not the commenters. I know I’ve had a few comments on my blog that I have basically thrown back in people’s faces and they’ve been very annoyed not to be able to go back and change things so it looked like I was lying about them. Right now there’s a fellow who is running for Mayor of London who has posted “As for Muslims, I think they are scum.” Should that fellow ever become a serious candidate, I intend to forward a link to that to the Guardian.
I fully support the WordPress policy on this one; if nothing else, it should make people pause before commenting and give some real thought to what they’re about to say.

i think editting works pretty well in the forums, where you can correct your spelling for 15 minutes, and then it’s set in stone.
as far as replying, you can manually type out
<blockquote>so-and-so says: something stupid<blockquote>
my witty replyso that people know what you’re referring to. the stuff inside the blockquote tags will be formatted the same differently so it will be obvious you’re quoting.

I find that copying what you want to comment on to a text document, and preparing it outside of wordpress works. Get all your html code sorted and in place like
<blockquote> or <strong>and copy and past in one shot. Some themes will strip parts of the code or not show it in the way you’d like but you have no control over that at all. -
