How to edit text widgets?
-
I’m about to add a counter to my blog and is trying to follow the instructions.
It says:
1. Copy the StatCounter code. Check
2. Log into wordpress.com. Check
3. Click “My Dashboard” in the top navigation bar. Check
4. Click “Appearance” and then click “Widgets” in the left navigation bar. Check
5. In the “Available Widgets” section, add a “Text” widget. And then I can’t go any further. The next step is: “A new “Text” option will now appear under the “Current Widgets” section of your wordpress dashboard – click the “Edit” link.”
But there is no “Edit” link. Only a 4-arrow cursor shows up and I can’t use it anywhere.
So what do I do?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Drag the widget to the place you want it on the page (Usually the right column for starters).

I did try that and my counter was shown but it “interuppted” the layout. I couldn’t see my Link-list anymore for example.

Are you in appearance > widgets? In the sidebar after you drag a test widget over to the “sidebar” then hovering your mouse over the right end causes an down arrow to appear and if you click there the text widget expands.

If you have not yet added any widgets, what you see is a sample display of widgets so you will know what it will look like. Once you add a widget that sample set disappears. Simply add in the other widgets that you want to have in the sidebar and drag and drop them into the arrangement that you want.

I love the widgets, but need a text format where I can create lists with tabs (upcoming events). How do I edit the text widget to accomplish this?

Here is a post I wrote about the new widget structure with image reference.

Thanks for the article. I have read about the pesky arrow before, but when I click on it there are no edit options. I am on a mac, should I be doing something different?

When I say editing capabilities, I mean like using tabs with leader lines, or being able to manipulate the text in the sidebar. Maybe the text widget isn’t the right one for what I need. I know the other widgets autopopulate with the info they were written for (pages, comments, etc). Is there any way of editing those styles with arbitrary test?

The widgets require text and HTML. There are no fancy buttons; no WYSIWYG stuff.
My suggestion is to start a new post and do all your “manipulating” with the tools in the editor, then when you are happy with it, switch to the HTML tab, copy all the stuff in that window and then paste it into the text widget. Don’t worry about the differences in width or anything like that. Text will flow and break as required in the text widget.

You’re very welcome. I’m moderately good with HTML and can code things by hand, but I always use the post editor. It is just so much faster and easier.
