How to Edit Widgets
-
I am unable to change from column block to any other block! I “removed block” and started all over. I clicked on List. But it still does the single column block like I chose a while ago. I am at a loss how to manage this system. The widget looks okay but it should not appear on all the pages. It should appear only on the My Bio page https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/my-bio/. How do I fix this?

Hello there,
Happy to help you with this.
I think we need to take things step by step, as I see there’s been multiple threads open surrounding this topic.
Can you first detail what widgets should appearing and where please? We can put together some steps to you achieve that.
The widget looks okay but it should not appear on all the pages. It should appear only on the My Bio page https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/my-bio/. How do I fix this?
Please see how to edit the widget visibility here: https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/#widget-visibility
I hope this helps!
Let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry for the many threads. I was getting desperate because no one was responding. Thought maybe I was posting it wrong.
The widget I want on only one page is More Bio Links and I want it only on this page: https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/my-bio/.
I tried following the instructions at https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/#widget-visibility. But it didn’t work. I don’t know how to use the Legacy widget. It gave me a batch of options. I want to post links to help readers find certain blog posts (as you can see if you look at the existing widget), so I chose Links. Then it posted a batch of links that have nothing to do with what I need. I deleted that.
Also, I cannot change the column block of the widget into Legacy because the Legacy block option does not show.
I got along well with the classical editor but I lost that option, too, for this widget.
Is there a way to get the formatting I want and all the other options I had on the classical editor? I need to be able to edit it easily to add a new title at any time.
This is so complicated. Every question I solve only raises a new one! Can we solve this once for all? Thank you.

I don’t know how to use the Legacy widget.
You can search for it. It is labeled “Legacy Widget”
Then you can select the widget you want from the drop-down list.
Finally, you can follow the instructions on https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/#widget-visibility to configure the visibility of the widget.

Like I say in my post, I did that and it didn’t work. Will you read all of my post and address the issues, please? I don’t know how better to explain!

I’m trying again. This is what comes up when I try to follow your instructions.
I’m trying to copy a screenshot here but it’s not working.
I’m at my wits end. Sorry.

I’m getting the hang of Legacy widget. My only problem now is how to make it show the correct links. I want it to show posts with unique tags (bio links). Here is what is happening.
– I tell it to show on this page: https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/my-bio/.
Then it shows on that page with the wrong links.
– I add the tag name and then it does not show at all.
I’ve worked on this for three hours and it’s not working. What am I doing wrong? I wish I could show screenshots on here.

Thanks so much. But that is for Mac computer only. I have to drag and drop a screenshot from my computer. Please see it at https://snipboard.io/MK9w47.jpg.
I also uploaded it in my Media Library as per an old Forum post.
That is the only way I can figure out to share it.

I’m not sure if you need a screenshot of the whole page. If so, please see https://snipboard.io/exkPBl.jpg.

@srbown,
I want it to show posts with unique tags (bio links). Here is what is happening.
– I tell it to show on this page: https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/my-bio/.
Then it shows on that page with the wrong links.
Here’s your “bio links” tag archive page, which shows each post with the tag “bio links” assigned to it. It includes the same nine posts displayed in the “More Bio Links” widget, just in a different order.
I don’t know if you can change the order in which they display in the widget anymore. The Settings section of the Navigation Menu Widget support page indicates that there is a “Reorder” link at the bottom of the widget. I don’t find this in my tests on the widget. Also of concern to me is that whether I choose the widget from the general Widgets list or from the Legacy Widgets option, I get the same widget.
– I add the tag name and then it does not show at all.
Not sure what you mean by that. Where are you adding the tag name?

Thanks so much for this information. You clarified a lot of terms for me that I did not understand previously and that may help me. I will try it and see if it works.

It’s not working. I thought I should choose Archive but there is no option for Archive. What should I put in each space on the Customizer? Here is what I am trying:
-Select Widget: Navigation Menu
-Title: More Bio Links
-Select Menu: [What goes here? If I choose Pages and Posts (2), I get the Menu for the Homepage. If I choose Topics, I get other stuff I don’t want. ]
-Visibility: [What all do I put here and in what order? If I add “tag” and name “bio links” the widget won’t show at all. ]Is there a problem because I use the free version? See the red X’s on the screenshot at https://snipboard.io/MK9w47.jpg.

I want all the links on the “bio links” tag archive page (https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/tag/bio-links/) to appear on only this page (no other page): https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/my-bio/

Select Menu: [What goes here? If I choose Pages and Posts (2), I get the Menu for the Homepage. If I choose Topics, I get other stuff I don’t want.
As a volunteer I can’t see what’s in any custom menus you might have created. The Navigation Menu Widget is designed to display the links in a menu. If a “Select Menu” you choose “Topics,” then it will display the custom menu that you’ve titled “Topics,” and only that. Same with “Pages and Posts (2).”
If you’ve created numerous custom menus, then you’d select the appropriate one. If none of those menus that you might have created include only the items that you want displayed in a particular navigation menu widget, then you’ll need to create another custom menu that does include only those items.
I don’t have a lot of experience with blocks, but it seems to me that it might be easier to produce the results that you want by using Blog Posts Block or a Navigation Block, instead of the Navigation Menu Widget (block).
Regarding the above alternatives:
The Display Settings section of the Blog Posts Block support page indicates that you may limit the posts displayed to those with a certain tag. When I tested the Navigation Block just now I was unable to determine how to change the display format from horizontal to vertical, an option mentioned in the Insert a Navigation Block section of the support page. I didn’t got further than that in my testing. When I added it to my sidebar widget area on a test site, it displayed the four menu items of an existent menu in two columns of two.
-Visibility: [What all do I put here and in what order? If I add “tag” and name “bio links” the widget won’t show at all. ]
The Visibility Settings have no effect at all on what’s displayed in a widget. They can only determine where (front page, static pages, posts, category pages, archive pages, etc.) the widget will be displayed. If you simply leave the settings at the default, then the widget will display everywhere that it is designed to according to that particular theme. You’d only need to customize the visibility settings if you want the widget to display in some cases, but not in every case allowed by the theme.
Is there a problem because I use the free version? See the red X’s on the screenshot at https://snipboard.io/MK9w47.jpg.
No, not with regard to the customization options in widgets. The red X’s are normal. The red X allows you to close a section when you’re finished with your customization choices in that section.

I want all the links on the “bio links” tag archive page (https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/tag/bio-links/) to appear on only this page (no other page): https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/my-bio/
To obtain that result, at Visibility Settings choose:
“Show” if
“Page” is
“My Bio: Bits & Pieces Written Over the Years” -
<The Visibility Settings have no effect at all on what’s displayed in a widget. They can only determine where (front page, static pages, posts, category pages, archive pages, etc.) the widget will be displayed. That is my problem. I want all the links on the “bio links” tag archive page (https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/tag/bio-links/) to appear on one page only, Here: https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/my-bio/
I know how to make a nice widget but it posts on every single page. That is not okay! I’ve been working all day on figuring out how to get it only on one page.
