How to enable "quote" function in forum comments?

We used to have numbered comments to link to, as well as a “quote” button that linked to the original quote upstairs in the post convo.

All we have now is “reply.”

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In the forum, you use the QUOTE button, which you can see directly above the Write Post Box.

In the forum there is no QUOTE button and there is no Write Post Box. If you’re referring to the Leave Comment Box, there’s no QUOTE button there either. Commenters have been using cut and paste as a workaround, but the comments don’t link back to the original as they used to.

The NEW POST box has no QUOTE setting button either.

Is it possible that the iNove template/theme changed and now disallows QUOTE and comment numbering?

Yes. there is. Above each comment box here you see these but aligned horizontally and not vertically:
    strong
    em
    link
    quote
    ul
    ol
    li
    code
    close

Inove is a retired theme that no longer supports all wordpress features. The HTML for comments appears to have been removed because I don’t see it in my test blog with that theme on it. I suggest you try another theme.

    Timethief–
Strong, em, link, etc. doesn’t show up, but your explanation confirms my suspicion. We’ll try a different theme. Thanks.

One more question. If we switch themes, do we need to reload & reconfigure all the widgets?

  • Unknown's avatar

Are we still talking about the forum? If not, please do a search of the forum because that question has been answered a million times.

No. Apparently the solution seems to be replacing the theme. All we need is a yes or no about the widgets. I’ll search the WP forum.

After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.

Cool. Thanks for your time, thief.

Okay, we’ve tried several WP Themes, and now we’re on “The Clean Home Theme.”

None of the themes we’ve tried re-instated the QUOTE button, and none had the comment editor appear, including “The Clean Home Theme.”

After an hour or so I found nothing in the WP FAQs that addressed this. If the solution is to purchase a template for these basic features, we’ll pony up… but there are no feature descriptions that address our problems.

All we need is a header, .jpg, .png & poll embedments, linkys, a right sidebar for widgets, and comments that allow for REPLY and QUOTE, preferably numbered. If the comments function has editing capabilities (like this forum does) all the better.

So, okay, you’re NOT talking about the forum.

The functions enabled in comments do not vary at WordPress.com depending on theme. They are all the same. There is no upgrade that changes this.

    Thanks, Raincoaster.

I’m talking about the comments forum in the “thread.”

The QUOTE button copied another’s comment into the reply box and included a link to the original comment, that when clicked, took the reader to the original comment, avoiding a lot of scrolling on a long thread.

We had that function for years, then it disappeared.
