How to enable user registration
-
Starting a new blog for a campus club. Need to be able to have users register for the blog so that they can post their own content. However they are unable to register for the blog via the Register link provided under the Meta menu. I’ve spent a fair amount of time looking up ways of enabling this feature but all of the things I’ve read thus far point towards an option under Settings > General. When I go there though I cannot seem to find an option to allow user registration.
At the moment it isn’t a big deal as the club is just starting, however, once we start to grow, it will be rather cumbersome to have to invite each member manually to the blog.
Thanks for your time and help, I very much appreciate it.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That is really the only way you will be able to add users to your site here on WordPress.com Please see these support docs for more info:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/ and
https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/Please be especially alert to the privileges of the various user roles.
To the best of my knowledge there’s no “Register” link in the Meta widget, so in order to get in touch with you to be added to your site, you could add a contact form to your site’s sidebar. This will generate an email to the email account listed as the Admin on the site and you can go from there.
Every person who is invited as a user will have to create a WordPress.com account if they don’t already have one and it’s best if they are logged in when they accept the invite.
Let us know if you need any more info or help on that.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. A bit of a bummer there isn’t a way for users to register without sending invites. I will look into using the contact widget on the sidebar.

You’re welcome.
My error is that I neglected to view your site while logged out and therefore did not see the Register link in the Meta widget. It seems that clicking that link brings a site visitor to sign up for their own WordPress.com website (which of course also creates an account), but that may be more than what your users need/want.
Adding a contact “sign-up” form to your site would be the first step in the process of inviting a new user.
When someone sends you a message via the contact form, you would then need to invite them to contribute to your site using the email address they provided. See the support docs I linked to above for adding new users.
You, as site Admin, can send up to 10 invitations at a time, but can add an unlimited number of new users.
In the invitation email they receive, there will be a link to sign up for a WordPress.com account if they don’t already have one. Users who already have an existing WordPress.com account can click the “Accept Invitation” link in the invitation email. Again, it is suggested that those that have a WPcom account be logged in when they click that Accept link.
Hope that is now clearer.
If you need more help or info on that, please post back here.

Reading through a few more forum threads on the topic of inviting/adding users, it seems that the invited users who create a new WPcom account will need to return to the invitation email to click on the Accept Invitation link after creating their account. This will take them directly to your site.
