How to ensure followers don't get lost when changing domains

Hello! I decided to start self-hosting and got set-up with bluehost yesterday. I am currently blogging at http://www.musingsandoats.wordpress.com, but will now be at the address http://www.musingsandoats.com. Before I export and import all of my content, I wanted to be sure that I wouldn’t lose any followers along the way. What is the best (free, if possible) way to do this? Or do we have to purchase Site Direct? Will they just be automatically redirected to my new site? Thanks so much!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You will need to install Jetpack, come back here and tag this “modlook”
and that will do it. Site redirect is a good idea but it redirects people going to your site. I would spend the money.

I am sorry, but how do I tag this “mod look”? And do I install jet pack before I export and import all of my new content to my new blog? Also, do I install jet pack on my new domain or my old .wordpress.com domain? Appreciate your help!

    Did you install jetpack>

No yet. Wasn’t sure if it needed to be installed on my old .wordress.com blog or on my new domain? Ands also wasn’t sure if I needed to do it before exporting and importing all my content to my new domain?

Install it on your new domain.

I’d recommend not transferring your followers until your new site is completely built out the way you want it. So go ahead and do your export/import etc. first.

Along the way, be sure to install the plugin Jetpack (http://jetpack.me) on your self-hosted site just as you would any other plugin. Once you’ve done that, connect Jetpack to the same WordPress.com account that you’re using for your WordPress.com site.

Once you’re all ready to go, post here again and I’ll transfer your followers (and stats, if you wish) over for you.

    Hey Jackiedana!
I have my new site built up to how I like it, and have installed Jetpack. I was wondering if you would be able to transfer over my followers now? My new website URL is http://www.musingsandoats.com
Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do! Thank you so very much for your help!!

I have transferred your WordPress.com subscribers and email followers as requested.

Please note that any WordPress.com followers who opted to receive email updates will need to re-subscribe again on your new site through the Jetpack signup box, otherwise they’ll only see new posts in their Reader. Non-WordPress.com email subscribers will continue to get email updates.

You might think about setting up a Site Redirect for your WordPress.com site at musingsandoats.wordpress.com to send your site visitors to your new domain. Otherwise, people will still be able to subscribe on your old site.

    Site Redirect

Also, do you wish me to merge your stats for you?

  • Unknown's avatar

That would be great, actually! And I will definitely check in to that site direct. Are there any free plugins that would allow me to redirect?

So, just to clarify, all of my followers from my old blog will be directed to my new one with the exception of the WordPress users who subscribed through email?

    Thanks again!!

I’ve merged your stats. Yes, you are correct about the followers. As for redirecting, if you want WordPress.com to do so automatically, you will need the site redirect upgrade. Alternately you can put up a message on your WordPress.com site directing them to the new one, but they will have to click through on their own.

oh, actually one more thing :/
Will I still be able to see the bloggers I follow on my new site? I know I could view them through the Reader tab on here, but didn’t see that on the new website?

You can view your followers by going to your stats (you can click on the sparkline in your admin bar or go to site stats in your Dashboard under Jetpack. Scroll down and you’ll see links that will take you to the list.
