How to expand the size of the viewable text for blogs?
-
The viewable area for my blog entries takes up about 1/6th of my screen. Is there a way I can expand this width?

Is it difficult to create my own theme with a custom area? Are we just talking about a html/css type of markup? Please point me to a tutorial if there is one.
Thanks

You can modify the CSS of any theme here at wordpress.com, but you cannot modify the underlying php or theme files, nor can up “upload” new themes. Sandbox is the most wide open theme here at wordpress.com and people have done a lot with it. You would have to buy the CSS upgrade.
There are CSS tutorials online and here is an FAQ to start you out: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/08/15/where-can-i-find-css-customization-help/
